Duterte: Hey, I was just playing up for the media like I always do. I didn't mean any of that.
Obama: Nice. From now on, just "don't mean any of that" when you talk about the Chinese leadership, or else start paying for all your naval and diplomatic defense yourself and start learning Mandarin, because you'll need it. Have I made myself clear?
Duterte: Yes, perfectly.
Obama: How reassuring. Because this is not a message I will be repeating. Magandang gabí.

(35,300 posts)Not chump change, but we were something like #7 in terms of donations. Japan really outstripped the US.
However, that's really what Congress allocated and the President signed into law. The conditions met, and Obama couldn't have stopped it without good reason. It's not like he dipped into the US treasury and decided to donate that much on his own, even if he suggested the amount.
Nice to think that we consider Duterte to be Obama's vassal or serf. Tough to take an anti-imperialist stance these days, esp. against your proper overlords. Just what was that subhuman thinking?

(68,868 posts)generally heads of state should expect to be taken at their word.
All alliances are temporary, something that Trumpito and his supporters should bear in mind.
Ever since we were asked to leave Subic Bay, I am not aware of any US president treating the Philippines like a colony any more. Otherise Abu Sayyaf might not have had such a tranquil sanctuary on Mindanao all these years. You must have better info than I do on Obama considering Duterte to be his vassal. Angan Tagalog ko idi magalén, and all that.
