Turkey has scrambled a total of six F-16 fighters jets near its border with Syria, the country's armed forces command says.

The move came in response to three cases of Syrian military helicopters approaching the Turkish border, although there was no border violation, according to the statement.

Last month, Syrian forces shot down a Turkish jet in the border area.

The incident further strained already tense relations.

On Friday, Turkey said it had begun deploying rocket launchers and anti-aircraft guns along the border in response to the downing of its F-4 Phantom jet.

Will Russia use them as human shields against NATO's prodding of their weapons technology ?

“According to the data in our hands, it points to our plane being shot by a laser or heat-guided surface-to-air missile. The fact our plane was not given an early radar warning, suggests it was not a radar-guided missile,” said Arinc.

In that region, things can spiral out of control very quickly and Syria's military is no match for the Turkish armed forces.

Fortifying the border - on each side - will actually help stabilize the situation and pacify the region.

aircraft shot down after sight seeing on the wrong side of the border for 5 minutes.

I'd wager it was gathering intel on Syrian defenses, meant to get splashed, tricked out with RC, and 'manned' by a couple Kurdish rebels.

U.S. intelligence indicates that a Turkish warplane shot down by Syrian forces was most likely hit by shore-based antiaircraft guns while it was inside Syrian airspace, American officials said, a finding in tune with Syria's account and at odds with Turkey.
