NBC News chairman praises Lauer for forum moderator performance

Source: The Hill

The chairman of NBC News had nothing but high marks for "Today" anchor Matt Lauer’s performance as moderator of Wednesday’s presidential "Commander-in-Chief Forum."

"Against all odds we were able to bring the two presidential nominees together for the first time and presented an important examination of what each would bring to the role of Commander-in-Chief," Andrew Lack, who also serves as MSNBC chairman, wrote in an internal staff note.

...

Lack also praised the ratings generated by the event, which outpaced nine of the Republican presidential primary debates and all but one from the Democratic side.

“Matt did a tremendous job — driving one of the most serious discussions to date on these topics. Nearly 15 million people watched the event, and over 26 million tuned in at some point during the hour."

41. So which is it; yesterday they said it was a disaster.

NBC News knows the "Commander-in-Chief Forum" was not Matt Lauer's finest hour.

One executive, speaking anonymously, was blunt about it: "Disaster."

The day after Lauer's back-to-back interviews of Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, several high ranking sources at the network said they hear the criticism and agree with at least some of it.

Even his internal defenders acknowledge flaws in the forum's production.

21. Why are you calling him a chairperson and not chairman?

The story properly calls him chairman. When the sex of the officeholder isn't known, that's when you use the genderless "chairperson." Otherwise it's either chairman or chairwoman.

we fought the gender-neutral battles for a long time, because we all know the power of gender-based words.

43. One may use any wrong word one likes, of course.

I'm all for gender-neutral language when it makes sense. I'm also all for acknowledging when a man is a man and a woman is a woman. Using a gender-neutral term in this case (when the identity of the chairperson is known) is kind of silly. It is needlessly overcompensating.

So of course he is touting it as a success or HIS boss will start asking questions.

Here's the secret... the biggest bosses are the public and the sponsors, and if we refuse to watch their crap and buy their products, they will go away. Matt Lauer has come close to pissing off the public several times that resulted in lost ratings, so it is possible.

19. I think Lauer did well. He brought in the main issue 'dogging' each candidate, let them answer

to the issues and then let the audience Vets ask their questions. In 30 mins there was time for only two Veterans questions.

The Clinton issue was the emails, especially classified. She had the time to make the statement, classified information she worked with was always on a different server.

An hour (30 mins each) was to short, I wish each had to answer questions for a couple hours. Clintons been 'stress tested' for several hours of 'questions' many times. Trump never.

25. Mr. Andrew Lack , Mr. Les Moonves, James Spigelman A, Brian L. Roberts

When you look at the history of the above people that are running the news, not one of them and I mean this, not one of them worked at doing any reporting, just maybe they should quit worrying about shareholder value and take a lesson from this "reporter, JOURNALIST" and how he reported on a issue during my time frame, this man also started a fund to memorialize the deaths of war correspondents.

The first question out of Matt's mouth to the dumpster should have been, if he (dumpster) could explain to everyone the "five medical deferments" he got for a bone spur during the Vietnam time frame, and whcih leg or foot it was, since now its being reported you don't know---------------really.
