House Dems to GOP on gun reprimands: 'Bring it on'

Source: The Hill

By Mike Lillis - 09/10/16 12:26 PM EDT

House Democrats have a simple message for the GOP leaders threatening to reprimand participants in last June's marathon gun-violence sit-in: Be our guest.

The Democrats say they not only have the policy advantage, as polls show overwhelming support for the gun reforms they're pushing. But they also feel they hold a political wildcard in the form of Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), a Black Caucus member and civil rights hero who led the day-long floor protest.

“If they want to come in and say that we're going to punish you for having a demonstration for gun violence prevention –– led by an all-American icon, John Lewis –– bring it on,” House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday. Lewis is an historic figure, having been beaten nearly to death by police during a 1965 rights march in Selma, Ala., that paved the way for passage of the Voting Rights Act. He's widely considered Capitol Hill's moral compass –– one essentially beyond reproach –– when it comes to issues of human rights and civil disobedience. And his Democratic allies are openly daring the Republicans to punish the protest amid a volatile election season in which GOP leaders are scrambling to appeal to the same minority voters their presidential nominee, Donald Trump, has driven away.

The Democrats' message is clear and gaining volume: “By going after any of us, you're going after John Lewis,” Rep. Joe Crowley (N.Y.), vice chairman of the Democratic Caucus, said this week.

much because that hurts them far more than anything as people then see them as weak.

It is pretty clear that the repubs do not realize that the country has changed and the people are not with them. Thanks to gerrymandered districts their insanity will continue for a while longer.

which are a problem in my neck of the woods. I don't want to be caught outside unprotected from large predators. We've had local horses attacked recently by a cougar and there have been several bear sightings in my neighborhood. That being said, I will be voting for Hillary and will fully support all of her common-sense legislation suggestions and will happily respect any laws she signs, because she's a very sensible person whose values I feel very comfortable with, and whose sanity I believe in and trust.

The dumpster, on the other hand, needs to be monitored by every national security organization we have. He's a threat to our very existence.

As someone who has a lot of guns. I support the call for bans on sales of any guns to anyone on the terrorist watch list or the do not fly list. I support better back ground checks on gun sales. I support closing the gun show and internet gun sale loop holes. I was thrilled they had the sit in. I do not support the open carry laws here in Texas.

I'm so sick of the Dems saying "how high?" every time the Republicans say "jump!" Our current Congress is the equivalent of a cobra hissing at a mouse all day.

House Republicans were furious when Democrats took over the House floor, a breach of decorum that shut down the chamber for 25 hours after Ryan refused to allow a vote on a gun-control bill. GOP lawmakers seethed in conference meetings following the incident — which garnered loads of favorable press for the Democrats — and demanded that Ryan act to rebuke them.

I have looked for any written or legislated action that could be taken - anyone??

If the answer is yes, then they deserve sanctions.

I'm pretty sure the answer to both questions is no. In which case Ryan is just blowing hot air.
