Suicide bomber hits mosque in Pakistan, killing at least 16

PESHAWAR, Pakistan — A suicide bomber detonated a blast Friday in a mosque in Pakistan’s tribal area near the Afghan border, killing at least 16 people and wounding near two dozen others, an official said.
No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, but the tribal areas are a base for the Taliban and other militant groups.
The government official, citing reports from local tribesmen, said the attacker entered a village mosque in the Mohmand district while more than 300 worshippers were attending the weekly prayer service just after noon. Shouting “Allahu Akbar,” he set off the blast, said the official, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the incident.
The attack came just after the final day of Eid al-Adha, a Muslim festival that includes animal sacrifices and several days of celebration.
