Sanders Urges Those Considering Third-Party Candidates To Vote For Clinton

Source: Talking Points Memo

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) on Friday urged Americans considering voting for third-party presidential candidates to instead vote for Hillary Clinton, painting Donald Trump as a risk that the country cannot afford. “Let us elect Hillary Clinton as president, and the day after, let us mobilize millions of people around the progressive agenda,” Sanders said in an appearance on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe.”

Asked about a New York Times/CBS News poll released Thursday showing that a third of voters under the age of 30 plan to vote for third-party candidates, Sanders offered his “pitch” to those younger voters, who overwhelmingly supported him in the Democratic primary.

“Look, I was a third-party candidate. I began my career running as a third party, getting 2 percent and then 1 percent,” Sanders said. “I'm the longest serving independent in the history of the U.S. Congress, but I think that before you cast a protest vote, because Clinton or Trump will be president, think hard about it. This is not a governor's race. It's not a state legislative race. This is the presidency of the United States.”

“And I would say to those people out there who are thinking of the protest vote, think about what the country looks like and whether you're comfortable with four years of a Trump presidency,” he continued.

I hope that all younger Americans will realize the choice is between Clinton and a racist reality TV show host.

...Why is it younger Americans that need to be told this? Most polls show that it's older generations who are actually explicitly voting for Trump over Clinton. More younger people are already convinced to vote for Hillary over Trump. Sure more of them are considering third party votes, but from what I've read the third party numbers are pretty evenly split between conservative and liberal younger voters so it's really a moot point how much damage that will do to Hillary over Trump.

How about we reserve more of our scorn for people over 40 (my age group), fewer of whom are voting for Hillary, and more of whom are not even bothering with the third party charade and just explicitly voting for Trump.

That's the demographic that's hurting democrats. If we can get half of these people to stand up for democrats and vote for democrats, it'll be a wave of blue!

IMO you need to start getting out to colleges and pound that message to your supporters how much harm to Clinton a third party vote would be.

The Libertarians -- who I'm afraid they know little about, but see as an alternative to Hillary (who they think they know, but only through the Rs'/Cons' slanders).
