At 105, D.C. closes in on all-time heat record
Source: Washington Post
It has been truly exceptional, said Chris Vaccaro, a spokesman for the National Weather Service. The high by 3:35 was 105 degrees at Reagan National Airport.
That breaks the previous record for this date, 102 in 2010, and this is only the 5th time on record that the temperature has hit 105 in DC. The all-time record is 106 degrees.
We continue our record-setting stretch of days at or above 95 degrees, Vaccaro said. Today is the tenth consecutive day, and tomorrow will likely be the eleventh, he said.
We made a quick run for the for the triple-digit mark: The temperature hit 100 degrees before noon, he said. It will be triple digits all afternoon and into the early evening hours. . .

We're not alone, I know. Ran errands this morning and staying in like everyone else today, in the (thankfully) up and running air conditioning. For now.
Only one man could possibly describe how hot it is today.
It was so hot today that Burger King was singing, "if you want it your way, cook it yourself."
It was so hot today I saw a robin dipping his worm in Nestea.
It was so hot, musicians were snorting ice cubes.
It's so hot, your Odor Eaters have sent up a white flag.
Its so hot I saw two trees fighting over a dog.

(13,184 posts)I used to live in DC. It was absolutely unbearable in the summer, and I never saw anything like 105.

All day I've been hearing people complain about the heat, while I was saying to myself, "back in the Swamp a day like this is nothing." Of course, it's at least five deg. F cooler here, too.
Still, I'd count myself lucky that the humidity was not in its usual 80-100% range. There were days where I wished I had gills.

(3,747 posts)that you have to learn to just ooze into the heat. If you fight it, you'll be more uncomfortable. Also, move from shade to shade outside. He was also astounded that there was such a temperature as zero!
Before we moved here, I was just explaining it as 4 season weather!

I guess DC was right up there with the best of them, today.

(8,434 posts)at a golf course in Dumfries. It's been horrible. Extreme humidity in the morning gives way to extreme heat and still bad humidity by noon. You don't get used to it, you just get used to sweating a lot.
When the heat wave breaks Monday and we see a high of 84 I'm gonna need to break out the parka.

(8,434 posts)I feel it outside too. It's not here just yet, but it's cooler outside than it has been for what feels like forever. Tomorrow will still suck, but relief is on the way I think. Hopefully it lasts for a little while.

(23,272 posts)I stumbled around opening windows and turning off the A/C. My well went out about 10 days ago and its been a water nightmare for us ever since (I have 40 horses). The well guy finally arrived today and replaced the pump but we've been slogging water from the neighbor in such quantities that that task alone has driven me crazy.
I usually take Sundays off and I plan to sleep for most of it.
obxhead
(8,434 posts)I've replaced well pumps before. They only seem to break at the worst possible time, but the job is not too tough.
40 horses though #%@&, I would have 2 pumps sitting on the shelf just in case. Just keeping the tiny garden moist has been a challenge. Hell, I would have a second well dug as well I think!

(23,272 posts)Pretty unusual for him and of course major equipment malfunctions always seem to happen like that.
Our neighbor lives close enough we could run hoses from two of their hydrants, and we have a large portable water tank we usually use to keep the dust down in the arenas. I can't imagine how hard this would have been if we hadn't been able to access any water during this. We've been to the local pool daily to shower and clean up each night which actually turned into a good family ritual for all of us together. It was a calming end to the day (even if my hair's a little green from the chlorine!).
The bright spot in all of this was that I pretty much gave up cooking so I've had a lovely run of restaurants and take-out.
I'm pretty sure that losing electricity would be tons worse. No A/C would have been unendurable. When I hear the stories of those without power I don't feel too bad.

riderinthestorm
(23,272 posts)so everyone knows what to do. I've never had to go this long before since my well guy usually gets out here very fast. It was just the perfect storm of intense heat and the July 4th holiday.
My neighbor's two horse barns are within 100 feet of two (out of 3) of our own barns. So we simply ran hoses from her place to ours and used the water truck for the third barn. Instead of using the wash rack, people hosed their horses where the water was. Bathrooms were probably the biggest problem with having to use buckets to "flush" but not insurmountable.
You have to keep a sense of humour when stuff like this happens. "Shit happens" is my mantra (literally and figuratively).

(18,652 posts)It is BLISTERING hot in DC. Seriously, do not let the elderly or frail go out for anything more than a short walk from door to (cool) car to A/C cooled bldg.
Wunderground says wind will shift from WSW to NW so that will cool things and hopefully we'll get some rain, too.
The green leaves on branches that cracked off in last week's storm dried up and browned in a day or two.

(10,857 posts)They can go downstairs from their federally-provided housing to an interconnected network of underground tunnels which will allow them to emerge inside the House offices, the Senate offices, the Supreme Court, the Capitol, the Library of Congress, and even the White House and Federal Triangle, all without ever stepping outside. They have three exclusive-use subway systems, or one can walk miles underground through filtered, climate-controlled air.
I'm pretty sure there are a few Members of Congress who have no idea at all how hot it was.

(5,198 posts)as it evaporates, it is cool. It cools down the major arteries of the neck and shoulders, and let the rest of the cool scarf hang down the front of your body. I don't care that my shirt is wet. I just keep wetting it, and it helps a lot Cotton or rayon is best, especially gauze material.
