He got up there and lied his a off': Carrier union leader on Trumps big deal

Source: MSN/Washington Post

The Secret Service agents told the Carrier workers to stay put, so Chuck Jones sat in the factory conference room for nearly three hours, waiting for president-elect Donald Trump. He’d grown used to this suspense.

Seven months earlier, at a campaign rally in Indianapolis, Trump had pledged to save the plant’s jobs, most of which were slated to move to Mexico. Then the businessman won the election, and the 1,350 workers whose paychecks were on the line wondered if he’d keep his promise.

Jones, president of the United Steelworkers 1999, which represents Carrier employees, felt optimistic when Trump announced last week that he’d reached a deal with the factory’s parent company, United Technologies, to preserve 1,100 of the Indianapolis jobs — u ntil the union leader heard from Carrier that only 730 of the production jobs would stay and 550 of his members would lose their livelihoods, after all.

At the Dec. 1 meeting, where Trump was supposed to lay out the details, Jones hoped he would explain himself. “But he got up there,” Jones said Tuesday, “and, for whatever reason, lied his a-- off.”

4. I bet there are 730 people that feel differently

So apparently Chuck Jones would have been happier if they all went away?

There may have been a lot of BS here, but I bet the 730 people that kept their jobs are pretty damn happy about it

6. The town is paying 7 million in lost tax revenue to Carrier to keep those jobs. That's about

ten grand a job.

It's a sucky deal. Yes. 730 kept jobs. What kind of jobs we don't know. And the town will be ruined by this deal.

9. If the jobs are in Indianapolis as the article stated, this deal likely won't ruin it

because it's much bigger than a town of say, 50000, that was dependent on one employer.

But that does not negate the lie, and I'd bet a lot of money that it will cost far more than $7 million in lost tax revenue and other "deal" elements.

It would have been better for Trump and Indiana to agree to devise infrastructure jobs to deal with our serious infrastructure problems, and find a way to pay for them.

7. I Think Chuck Would Have Been Happier if Trump Kept His Word

Trump talked about saving all of the jobs. Instead, Trump basically paid Carrier a ransom to just save a little over half, then declared that he delivered on his promises. And, it was not because of some actual policy or program, but it was a one-off deal that does nothing to fix the structural issues leading to the loss of manufacturing jobs.

I can see a Trump Presidency where he arranges 10 to 20 such deals per year, which allows him to bask in the limelight and the adulation of the folks whose jobs were saved, while ignoring the millions who do not manage to be lucky enough to be included in Trump's latest photo op.

12. If I understand correctly, that's over 10 years.

http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/carrier-corp-deal-differs-common-incentives-indiana-43934434

"The furnace and air conditioner manufacturer will receive $5 million in tax credits over the next decade in exchange for keeping hundreds of jobs at its Indianapolis plant, the Indianapolis Star ( http://indy.st/2gIkhHZ ) reported. It will also get $1 million in training grants and up to $1 million in additional tax credits based on its planned $16 million investment in the factory."

27. About that $16 million investment

http://finance.yahoo.com/news/ceo-united-technologies-just-let-231538059.html

From the transcript (emphasis added):

GREG HAYES: Right. Well, and again, if you think about what we talked about last week, we're going to make a $16 million investment in that factory in Indianapolis to automate to drive the cost down so that we can continue to be competitive. Now is it as cheap as moving to Mexico with lower cost of labor? No. But we will make that plant competitive just because we'll make the capital investments there.

JIM CRAMER: Right.

GREG HAYES: But what that ultimately means is there will be fewer jobs.

FEWER JOBS!!!

Really, Jones, were you not paying attention at all this past year? I understand you really wanted to believe (like kids do with Santa) and really wanted to save union jobs. But these are republicans you're dealing with, and you're a union guy.

22. It is a good response. I am not caring for this Jones guy too much but

at least he had the good sense to vote for Hillary--the Democrat. His comment about voting for her was unnecessary and stupid.

...........“Trump and Pence, they pulled a dog and pony show on the numbers,” said Jones, who voted for Hillary Clinton but called her "the better of two evils." “I almost threw up in my mouth.”

Spokespeople for Trump did not respond to the Post’s request for comment.

In exchange for downsizing its move south of the border, United Technologies would receive $7 million in tax credits from Indiana, to be paid in $700,000 installments each year for a decade. Carrier, meanwhile, agreed to invest $16 million in its Indiana operation. United Technologies still plans to send 700 factory jobs from Huntington, Ind, to Monterrey, Mexico.............

18. For Whatever Reason????

For whatever reason????

You're seriously asking that "effing" question Mr. Jones???

Let me guess...the "whatever reason" he "lied his ass off", is because he's a fucking pathological liar.

Dear God we need to start using the right language to combat this fucktwit.

My dream would be that every time the GOP brings up some Trump wanted legislation, dozen of Democrats would get in front of the camera and simply say; "so, the Republicans are in support of Pussy Groping"

Seriously, you want CNN, MSNBC and hell, even Faux News to cover you 24/7 and at least get your message and point out? Refer to every god damn Republican as a Pussy Groping pedophile supporter.

During the debate to repeal Obamacare, I want to hear the following from Democrats;

"Excuse me, Republican Senator Fuck-Twit...Parliamentary Inquiry...under your proposal, if Trump grabs a woman's pussy, will her injuries be covered"?

24. I dont understand the angst

I am really baffled by this. 730 union members in Indiana will continue to be employed that were previously told the jobs would be going to Mexico.

The union leader is mad because a) Trump said they would all be saved and wasn't able to do so, therefore he lied about it b) Trump took credit for saving them.

Sure the state of Indiana has provided tax incentives. They made that decision that was better than having the plant close altogether. It would have been nice for all of them to be saved, but I bet those that were able to keep their jobs were happy.

Almost seems like people would have been happier if everyone would have lost their jobs. I don't get it.

25. I'm baffled at your bafflement

He lied about what he would do, what he did, and what happened. It's all very straightforward. Not sure why you're projecting that into people wishing those 750 workers lost their job. Also, I don't know why you think a union leader who was lied to, and who knows Trump lied to America after the fact, should shut up and be happy about it. It's a really weird stance to take. For some reason, you are going out of your way to change the story to something it isn't.
