The British ex-spy behind the Trump dossier was an FBI asset
Source: Yahoo
The man behind the sensational story concerning information the Russian government had supposedly collected about Donald Trump is a former British intelligence operative and was a longtime intelligence source for the U.S. government who had assisted the FBI during an investigation into corruption by FIFA, the world soccer association, according to sources familiar with the matter.
The operative identified today by the Wall Street Journal as Christopher Steele, a former Russian operations officer for Britains MI6 intelligence agency had worked as a consultant for the FBIs Eurasian organized crime section, helping to develop information about ties between suspected Russian gangsters and FIFA, said one of the sources, who is directly familiar with Steeles work.
Steele had been hired originally to investigate Trump by his political opponents, and he decided to share his information with the FBI last year. The preexisting relationship between Steele and U.S. officials is one reason the FBI took the operatives allegations seriously when he first turned over a written dossier, filled with uncorroborated raw intelligence about Trump, to one of the bureaus agents in Rome last summer, the sources said.
The credibility of some of those allegations is now in question after Trump, at a news conference, denounced the claims as completely false and attacked the news media for circulating them and the intelligence community for including a two-page summary of the explosive charges in a classified briefing that was given to President Obama, to congressional leaders, and to Trump himself.

(16,066 posts)That Nixon denied any part in Watergate, Reagan denied any part in the Iran-Contra incident...just because Trump denounced it, doesn't mean it's not all true!!!

(29,192 posts)we got played again. The person or persons who leaked the GoldenShowers story WAS the Trump campaign (or assets associated with them).
Trump is going to use this to
1. Discredit the financial dealings that he has with Russian Oligarchs
2. Ask for new Libel Laws to shield him from "fake news" (and to silence the press)
3. to discredit Buzzfeed and CNN
4. define what is and is not "fake news"
5. Train the press (they value ACCESS over anything) into only doing positive stories on Trump

I'm sure there's a spy term for this kind of double-back twist.

(2,025 posts)An ex-MI6 officer who is believed to have prepared a memo claiming Russia has compromising material on US President-elect Donald Trump is now in hiding, the BBC understands.
Christopher Steele, who runs a London-based intelligence firm, is believed to have left his Berkshire home this week.
The memos contain unsubstantiated claims that Russian security officials have compromising material on Mr Trump.
The US president-elect said the claims were "fake news" and "phoney stuff".
Mr Steele has been widely named as the author of a memo - which has been published in some US media - that contains extensive allegations about Mr Trump's personal life and his campaign's relationship with the Russian state.
Among the allegations are that Moscow has a video recording of Mr Trump with prostitutes and damaging information about his business activities.
BBC news correspondent Paul Wood said he understood Mr Steele left his home in Berkshire on either Tuesday or Wednesday, before he was publicly named, and was now "in hiding".
He said he had been told Mr Steele had asked his neighbour to look after his cats.
Our correspondent said he had been shown the memos about Mr Trump in October last year, when he was told Mr Steele was "in fear of his life", having spoken out about potential Russian involvement in Mr Trump's election.
He said he had been told by members of the intelligence community that Mr Steele was "extremely, highly regarded" and was thought of as "competent".

(972 posts)Bear with me because this might get a little far fetched.
Russia gets wind that Steele, who has to be known to Russia, is digging around for information. They let out a few stories about Russian security officials having compromising information about Trump with the intent on finding out where the leaks are in their own internal organization.
Now he's in hiding. Why? I going to guess a number of his sources have been "unavailable".
