Trump administration officials have released an outline of their plan to take an axe to the federal budget, and theyre targeting everything except military spending. Aiming to reduce spending by $10.5 trillion over ten years, they will accomplish this by gutting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security, breaking one of Donald Trumps biggest campaign promises.
It is my intention to leave Social Security as it is! announced Trump in a March debate. He told the Heritage Foundation the neoliberal far-right think tank that drafted the budget outlines used by Republicans in Congress that Im not going to cut Social Security like every other Republican and Im not going to cut Medicare or Medicaid. Every other Republican is going to cut, and even if they wouldnt, they dont know what to do because they dont know where the money is. I do.
But it appears Donald Trump, pathological liar and ideological weathervane, is backtracking on his promises yet again. The Hill reports that the budget reductions are based off a Heritage Foundation outline, and a Mother Jones analysis found that this means the Trump Administration will be cutting Medicare by 41%, Medicaid by 41%, and Social Security by 8%

(2,037 posts)they'd confess that what they really meant is: "Whites only! Stop letting minorities and gays have access to Medicare!"
with the supposed demise of "political correctness", why don't they just let it all hang out and broadcast what their really thinking....brown people should be kept as pets, gays stoned to death and women pregnant and in the kitchen. Even now the haters, racists, misogynists and homophobes still can't bring themselves to just say what they're really thinking. Could it be that deep down, even they believe their thoughts are vile and evil? One can only hope.

Lol. The Hill suggests there could be issues getting this through Congress, and another source wonders if Trump has actually approved what all this suggests. We know it's far too complex for him to understand the details. Let's see how unquestioningly loyal his followers are.
Btw, for those interested, The Hill leans solidly right, and has some very biased writers, but has very good DC contacts and is overall considered a respectable source.
Occupy Democrats is very left, but not only lacks depth but is considered a better source for propaganda than reliable information--a counterpart to the propaganda sources on the right. Useful as a heads-up on something other sources are still investigating and confirming--to kick off a search for those other sources. Like Mother Jones, Slate, and Vanity Fair, which all lean left and have already written on this but have solid reputations.

(45,806 posts)I think you're wrong. I know several of my neighbors who are very strong con supporters, but they're living on SS only. If they lose any, even a small amount, they'll panic. You're probably right about the younger voters, but those who are directly affected by reduction is SS or Medicare, they'll not only care. they'll be OFF the con wagon.

(64,988 posts)SS is the true third rail of politics. The whole stupid tea party thing was about the government taking too much money out of people's pockets. This is the same thing. So, those people are going to resent this as much as the "overtaxed" thing. Probably a lot more.
He's not doing anything, he is ask/telling congress to do it. The president has very little power in these matters. the right -wing will need to think very hard about cutting medicare and Social Security, that is if they want to keep their cushy day jobs.

(1,397 posts)Republicans so hated Franklin Roosevelt they would not speak his name, referring to him instead as "That Man."
I have promised myself not to speak or write the name of the piece of shit who will be sworn in as President on January 20, 2017, referring instead to him as "That Man." I know -- sounds like sour grapes but it's my grapes.
So -- if you agree, find your own pet name for That Man and use it until he's impeached.
Dead going on 60 years, FDR still makes self-styled champions of American-style capitalism fulminate, much the same way their counterparts in the 1930s raged against "That Man." Why? The New Deal era reminds national greatness Republicans like Wehner of their party's futility in a time of true national greatness. I also suspect that many Republicans are simply unable to forgive Roosevelt for what may have been his greatest and longest-lasting achievement: saving American capitalism through regulation. And since they can't tear down the Triborough Bridge or the Hoover Dam, these guys act out by going after Social Security.

It'll begin at 70-72 years of age, it'll be tied to the stock market, and your payments will not be a guaranteed amount. They still want you to pay into the fund, after all. They just don't want you benefiting overly much from the protection it was designed to offer.
None of that really matters though, once they're done with Medicare most of us won't live to collect SS.

The group of people around him want this, it might not be what he and pence end up with as their budget recommendation. Plus, another area, his daughter advocated for family paid leave.

(9,110 posts)Its not clear whether Trumps first budget will include reforms to Social Security or Medicare, two major drivers of the federal deficit.
Trump vowed during the campaign not to cut Medicare and Social Security, a pledge that Rep. Tom Price (R-Ga.), his pick to head the Department of Health and Human Services, told lawmakers in testimony Wednesday has not changed.
Yet it could be very difficult to reduce U.S. debt without tackling the entitlement programs. Conservative House budgets have repeatedly included reforms to Medicare and Social Security, arguing they are necessary to save the programs.

(4,033 posts)Trump can propose, but I don't think the House could get the votes to pass if. Remember, Reps only get a two year term, and WAY too many people, both those of us who depend on Medicare and Social Security and our kids would take it really personally. Our kids would not be appreciative that we could no longer afford to live in our own home and had to move in with them and they would have to pay to help make up for the loss of our Medicare to keep us alive. They might not remember their Senator in six years, but our local Representative, that they can remember for a year and vote him out. And our Reps know it!

(13,421 posts)There's one block of voters that votes without fail, and they are the ones on Social Security and Medicare--The Seniors. Traditionally, those same folks tend to vote Republican in higher percentages. Screw up SS and Medicare, and they will be beyond unhappy, and looking to clean house of anyone that votes to change those programs.
It has been called the "Third Rail" for a long time, and there's a reason why.
