WASHINGTON (AP) The Latest on the Women's March on Washington and associated protests around the world (all times EST):
12:40 p.m.
So many people have turned out for the Women's March in Chicago that organizers have cancelled their plans to march through the city's downtown.
Instead, they'll extend the ongoing rally on the city's lakefront.
Organizers say far more people than they were initially expecting are at the demonstration in Grant Park along Lake Michigan, and overflow areas are being used.
They say the planned march through downtown Chicago had to be canceled due to public safety concerns, but that the rally has been extended until 12:30 p.m. Central time.
Protesters are still arriving at the rally, many with signs critical of President Donald Trump.

(5,810 posts)They gave extensive coverage to the DC rally but have reporters in Chicago and in LA. They are mentioning Sister Marches around the country, so I would not say they have short changed this event happening around the nation and some 60 countries, as well.

(21,039 posts)But I was so happy to see so many people there protesting despite the weather. I gave up walking though at Powell street and came home.

(12,448 posts)Streets are so packed marching is impossible. Crowd estimates here up to 500,000! Traffic and Metro virtually at a standstill.

(12,448 posts)The entire phenomena, all the marches, throughout the country and in all seven continents including Antarctica was the most amazing thing I've ever witnessed. In DC there were NO arrests; unprecedented for that crowd size.

(29,181 posts)by. Slamming their fists violently on the buses, etc, no good reason. This was toward the end of the day.

(12,448 posts)Yes, they should have been arrested. But OUR crowd was energetic, but peaceful!

(895 posts)Unbelievable crowd! Even tho they had to call off the official march, the people marched anyway! Every one was kind, patient, and ready to act. This is what democracy looks like!
