Supermarket operator Kroger to fill 10,000 permanent posts

Source: Reuters

Mon Jan 23, 2017 | 8:47am EST

U.S. supermarket operator Kroger Co said on Monday it would fill 10,000 permanent positions in its supermarket divisions.

Kroger, which had about 431,000 full- and part-time employees as of Jan. 30, 2016, also said its total active workforce grew by more than 12,000 in 2016.

The world's No. 1 retailer Wal-Mart Stores Inc said last week it would create about 10,000 jobs in the United States this year, as President Donald Trump puts pressure on companies to hire more U.S. workers.

Companies such as General Motors Co and Amazon.com Inc have also announced plans to add jobs in the United States.

They easily could of announced all this stuff last summer to help democratic supporters and give Hillary and president obama bragging points. Now? Spit!!! Yes I'm glad that people will get jobs but the timing is political and suspect.

They are outsourcing or consolidating their skilled positions. They are working to going all 'pre-pack' in their meat department, bringing in 'pre-baked'' goods to their bakery, 'pre-made' deli items, and so on. They are cutting back more and more on the skilled workers - those who used to cut meat, slice deli meat, bake the breads and donuts on site, and so on. As they scale back on the skilled workers in those depts, the workers are offered jobs as stockers and the like, with significant pay cuts.

not kill them off but leech off a percent of their local customers who can afford delivery fees.

by the way amazon, your prime delivery is so annoying, people in their private cars pull up at all hours to hand deliver one item out of a 8 item order. wish they would separate the delivery and the prime movies.

Any job gains that Kroger realizes due to increased market share will be job losses for their competitors.

that is considered full employment. So he's says going to create jobs when near everyone has a job. At least some of these jobs can move into full time rather than the part time jobs they have been forced to accept.

Shop at a Harris Teeter? You're shopping at Kroger.
Shop at Roundy's? You're shopping at Kroger.
Shop at Ralph's? You're shopping at Kroger.

Kroger has over 430,000 employees. An additional 10,000 is around 2 percent. And it doesn't say anything about where they might cut employees by closing stores -- something they've been known to do when the chains they acquire operate in the same communities where Kroger already has a presence.
