Trumps federal hiring freeze draws immediate fire from union

Source: Washington Post

News of the executive order drew immediate fire from the largest federal employee union.
“President Trump’s action will disrupt government programs and services that benefit everyone and actually increase taxpayer costs by forcing agencies to hire more expensive contractors to do work that civilian government employees are already doing for far less,” said American Federation of Government Employees President J. David Cox Sr. “This hiring freeze will mean longer lines at Social Security offices, fewer workplace safety inspections, less oversight of environmental polluters, and greater risk to our nation’s food supply and clean water systems.”

Earlier this month, The Washington Post reported that the Obama administration was accelerating hiring to get employees in place before Trump took over. But individuals hired, but who have not yet started working, still could be affected by a freeze.
. . .
In 1982, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) examined hiring freezes imposed by former presidents Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan and determined that was not an effective strategy.

Hiring freezes have “little effect on Federal employment levels,” the GAO said. The report said the freezes “disrupted agency operations, and in some cases, increased costs to the Government.”

such as scientific officers for USDA, NSF, the Office of Science and Technology Policy (though probably they have in mind to eliminate that office entirely)
and knowledgeable naturalists and researchers at NASA, NOAA, the National Park Service and other federal lands.

Also, competent and non-partisan economic analysts at Labor, Treasury, and many other depts.
Statisticians in almost every area of government.
Also, trained, experienced diplomats at the State Dept. (And you know that many career diplomats are going to be resigning. . )

And that's just what comes to mind off the top of my head.

It may take a while to show up in USA Jobs, etc.
And some jobs (national security, etc) are reportedly exempt.

the first move in an attempt to destroy the career civil service employee structure, which acts as a check to unrestrained power of the executive. What a surprise.

This is something these assholes said they were going to do during the campaign, no one really paid attention because stuff like this isn't as spectacular as crowd size, Putin, tax returns, pussy-grabbing, etc.
