Mattis, Pompeo stunned by CIA 'black sites' report
Source: Politico
Two of the officials who will be in charge of carrying out President Donald Trump's terrorism detainee policies, Defense Secretary James Mattis and CIA Director Mike Pompeo, were blindsided by reports of a draft executive order that would require the CIA to reconsider using interrogation techniques that some consider torture, according to sources with knowledge of their thinking.
Lawmakers in both parties denounced the draft order on Wednesday even as White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said he had no idea where it came from and that it is not a White House document.
Its unclear who wrote the draft order or whether Trump will sign it, though members of Congress in both parties were taking that prospect seriously on Wednesday. [snip]
Despite the questions about who wrote the document, more than a half-dozen lawmakers issued statements denouncing it. They're likely trying to get out front of any attempt by Trump to return the country to now-outlawed interrogation techniques.

Just as terrifying as the contents of the potential EO is the fact that nobody seems to know who's doing anything. It's a madhouse at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW.

My brother came within 36 hours of execution by electrocution Even if I did not have the personal connection, I have been an opponent of the death penalty for far longer. I have read descriptions and seen images of the trauma sending thousands of volts of electricity through a human being does, both to the the individual being tortured to death and their loved ones watching (as I would have done for my brother). It is not something I can easily tolerate casually scrolling across without warning.
I am shaking as I write this, and had to scroll it off the page to respond.

Trump draft order could lead to new CIA-run black site

WASHINGTON The Trump administration is readying a sweeping review of how America conducts the war on terror, including possible resumption of banned interrogation methods and reopening CIA-run black site prisons outside the United States, according to a draft executive order obtained by The Associated Press.
The order would also instruct the Pentagon to send newly captured enemy combatants to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, instead of closing the detention facility as President Barack Obama had wanted. Altogether, the possible changes could mark a dramatic return to how the Bush administration waged its campaign against al-Qaida and other extremist groups.
Trump spokesman Sean Spicer, questioned about the draft order, said it was not a White House document, but he would say no more about it.
The three-page document instructs top national security officers to recommend to the president whether to reinitiate a program of interrogation of high-value alien terrorists to be operated outside the United States and whether such program should include the use of detention facilities operated by the Central Intelligence Agency.
The document says U.S. laws should be obeyed at all times and explicitly rejects torture.
But its reconsideration of the harsh techniques banned by Obama and Congress is sure to inflame passions in the United States and abroad. .....................

He can try to deny it bit it is part of leadership.
It belongs to Trump.
If it comes down to actually being signed, will Mattis and Pompeo follow it or refuse?

(7,410 posts)Politico ought to be sent to the woodshed for this (just kidding, but..). People have been executed for waterboarding. Torture is a crime and a war crime. It's in the Geneva Conventions, which, if anyone's paying attention, is also the law WITHIN the US. Don't think so? Check the Constitution-- that little clause about treaties.
So, editors of Politico, grow a spine and report a fact.

(23,001 posts)Waterboarding is a know method of torture, we have sent people to jail for doing this in the past. This wasn't just "now outlawed", it was always outlawed. Shrub admin. just tried to do this secretly and got caught red handed. They broke the law and got their wrists slapped, so now Hair Furor thinks he can do it with impunity. That's probably not all, he's said he wants to turn ISIS' tactics against them, so presumably wants to behead people. He also wants to go after all their family members, he's a rogue criminal and cares nothing about the law, ethics, fairness or anything in the world other than his own power and $$.
