The president claimed during his first major interview that two people were shot and killed during Obama’s farewell speech, but Chicago Police say that’s not true.

Donald Trump falsely claimed during his first major interview as president that two people were shot and killed in Chicago during former President Barack Obama’s farewell speech.

“Look, when President Obama was there two weeks ago making a speech, a very nice speech. Two people were shot and killed during his speech,” Trump told ABC News’ David Muir. “You can’t have that.”

The president was referring to Obama’s farewell speech on Jan. 10 in Chicago’s McCormick Place.

“They weren’t shot at the speech. But they were shot in the city of Chicago during his speech,” Trump said during the interview, which aired Wednesday night. “What—what’s going on?”

An ABC News transcript of its interview with President Donald Trump on Wednesday quoted him as saying that two people were fatally shot in Chicago while his predecessor, Barack Obama, was giving his farewell speech at McCormick Place — a claim shown to be false by Police Department records.

The passage in question was not included in the broadcast aired Wednesday night, but the network posted a longer transcript on its website that contained the remarks in question. An ABC spokesman confirmed to the Tribune on Thursday that the transcript accurately depicted the president's words, but the network did not immediately share the video with the Tribune.

He texted me the other day "Trump said he would win so much we would get tired of winning! Well, I'm not tired yet, guess he lied to me!" What can you say to that? What news channel are YOU watching, dude? (As if I don't know...)

Anyway, in the ensuing text dialog he sent me this: "More black people died in Chicago (of gun violence, I assume he meant) then American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan."

Well, I looked up a few statistics, and MAN, the numbers are alarming. Hard to believe (from up here in Canada) how epidemic the gun violence is down there. So, ok, lots of people being shot in Chicago, what does that prove? But then he follows it with THIS:

"8 years Obama did nothing to help Chicago, or any inner city black people."

I mean, I guess the obvious response is "What do YOU think Trump is going to do to help "inner city black people"? Send in the national guard? Lock them up? Nuke 'em?"

However, the "Obama did nothing..." comment got to me. Kind of a vague accusation; certainly whatever has been done hasn't been enough to stop the violence.

Please don't hate on me: I am seriously trying to find ways to engage with this young man. The lies they tell at brietbart are insidious and seem to multiply: for every lie or half truth I debunk 5 more spring up to take it's place.
