Johnson removed as chairman of the Nuclear Energy Institute

Source: Tampa Bay Times

The Nuclear Energy Institute removed former Progress Energy CEO Bill Johnson as chairman and member of its board after his decision to resign as head of the utility that merged with Progress Energy earlier this month.

NEI, an organization of the nuclear energy and technologies industry that participates in both the national and global policy-making process, requires that the chairman of its board must be an executive of a utility and board members work for a power company.

Johnson, a long-time executive of Progress Energy, resigned as CEO of Duke Energy less than a day after the two utilities merged on July 2.

For 18 months after the companies announced they would merge, Johnson was slated to become the CEO of the combined utility. But the new company's board of directors ousted Johnson and replaced him with Duke's CEO Jim Rogers. The issue has prompted an investigation and hearings by the North Carolina Utilities Commission and attorney general's office.

this is all extremely interesting and close to home for me. Sounds like there was a powerful coup going on.

So far, the insurer, the Nuclear Electric Insurance Ltd., whose board includes Johnson, has balked at paying for repairs.

Without insurance coverage, repairs and related costs — which could exceed $2.5 billion — would all become the responsibility of Duke and its customers.

Estimated repair costs have ballooned grom a couple hundred million to 2.5 billion. Still not deterrmined who pays, PE or insurance. Probably end up us customers. We already pay highest power rate in state
