General Motors to Lay Off up to 600 Workers at Ontario Plant

Source: WSJ

TORONTO— General Motors Co. plans to lay off up to 600 workers at a southwestern Ontario plant as production for its older Chevrolet Equinox sport-utility vehicle winds down and production of a new SUV model is being moved in Mexico.

Unifor Local 88 President Dan Borthwick said Friday that GM informed him it will end older Equinox production at its CAMI Assembly plant in Ingersoll, Ontario, nearly 100 miles east of Toronto, in July, about a year earlier than scheduled. A smaller, new generation of the Equinox will continue to be built at the plant, which currently employs about 3,200 workers. The plant also builds the GMC Terrain SUV, but production of a redesigned version of the vehicle will be built at a GM plant in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, GM CEO Mary Barra said earlier this month.

The layoffs come as GM plans thousands of layoffs in the U.S. related to a downturn in demand for small cars. The company said earlier in January it will eventually make $1 billion in fresh investments in the U.S., which will lead to more than 1,000 new jobs.

GM is among the Detroit auto companies under pressure from the Trump administration to reverse course on Mexico production. Executives met with the new president earlier this week, and have said tariffs on cars built in Mexico would be harmful to the U.S. auto makers.

Fearless leader Trump just talked to GM a few days ago and TOLD them all new plants must be built in America or FACE a 35% tariff when imported back in.

Guess they didn't dig what he had to say..................

I've driven by that Oakville plant on several occasions. It's a huge place, and i would say (except for rush hour on the QEW), you could be in Niagara Falls, NY in about 40 minutes.

So, the plant is about as close to the US as it could get, Canada is our closest ally, a huge trading partner, yet he won't care about that. It is such an idiot.
