Refugees Detained at U.S. Airports; Trump Immigration Order Is Challenged

President Trumpís executive order closing the nationís borders to refugees was put into immediate effect on Friday night. Refugees who were airborne on flights on the way to the United States when the order was signed were stopped and detained at airports.

The detentions prompted legal challenges as lawyers representing two Iraqis held at Kennedy Airport filed a writ of habeas corpus early Saturday in the Eastern District of New York seeking to have their clients released. At the same time, they filed a motion for class certification, in an effort to represent all refugees and immigrants who they said were being unlawfully detained at ports of entry.

Mr. Trumpís order, which suspends entry for all refugees for 120 days, created a legal limbo for people on their way to the United States and panic for families who were awaiting their arrival.

The presidentís order also blocks the admission of refugees from Syria indefinitely, and bars entry into the United States for 90 days from seven predominantly Muslim countries linked to concerns about terrorism. Those countries are Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

1. Does It Surprise Anyone Here That As Soon As Trump Signed This Executive Order That.....

it was put into immediate effect? It's almost like this was just sitting there waiting for a signature and boom - we start closing borders. It is reminiscent of the Patriot Act - being written and ready - just waiting to be put into effect if we had an incident like 9/11.

I'm interested in opinions on this from DUer's.

2. I was surprised...

This seems illegal, Trump is not King and it's just so cruel, not to mention the fear I have that these countries can retaliate by attacking or banning Americans in their countries? He's beyond a bully and where is the outrage from our Dem leaders or any party leaders? This is NOT what America stands for! I've been anxiety filled since last night...ugh!

3. It is illegal -- it is also against the act of 1965

An EO cannot change settled law/an act of Congress like that.

5. Then why are people being detained?

Who is directing immigration to comply? Where is our congress to stop this??

4. This is so sad

Because many of the refugees already here are waiting on family, this could break 'em apart.

8. And if it's overturned, and theres an act of terrorism, he can point to how he tried to head it off.

And gain popularity.
This is just the beginning of these deceitful planned out acts to steal our country.
