Spicer: Diplomats Should Either Back Immigration Order Or Leave
Source: Talking Points Memo
By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published JANUARY 30, 2017, 3:00 PM EDT
White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer on Monday afternoon responded to reports that a group of U.S. diplomats were [link:http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/exclusive-us-diplomats-filing-dissent-immigration-ban/story?id45135038drafting a memo] to condemn President Donald Trump's executive order denying entry to people from seven predominantly Muslim countries.
Spicer said that the career State Department employees should either fall in line behind Trump and his executive order or leave the agency.
"I think that they should get with the program or they can go," Spicer said at the daily press briefing, referring to State Department staff who "have a problem" banning people from the seven countries.
Spicer defended the executive order, insisting that it was about safety and arguing that the order "has been blown way out of proportion and exaggerated."

Spicer Melts Down: Criticizing Holocaust Remembrance Statement Is 'Pathetic'
By ESME CRIBB Published JANUARY 30, 2017, 2:46 PM EDT
White House press secretary Sean Spicer went on a tear Monday about criticism of the Trump administration's statement commemorating International Holocaust Memorial Day, saying that those "picking on" the statement's failure to explicitly mention Jews are "pathetic" and "nitpicking."
"The statement was written with the help of an individual who's both Jewish and the descendent of Holocaust survivors," Spicer told reporters at a White House daily briefing. "To suggest that remembering the Holocaust and acknowledging all of the people, Jewish, Gypsies, priests, disabled, gays and lesbians, it is pathetic that people are picking on a statement."
He cited an Republican National Committee statement issued at Christmas that reporters similarly seized upon.
"I remember we issued a statement at Christmastime calling Christ the king and many reporters that are in this room and otherwise started wondering if we were referring to the king as the President-elect," Spicer said, his voice rising in volume. "Do you know how offensive that was to Christians?"

Can they really afford to lose more people at the State Department?

Per the Foreign Affairs Manual:
a. You may use the Dissent Channel without fear of pressure or penalty. Discouragement of, or penalties for use of, the Dissent Channel are impermissible. Dissent Channel users who believe that they have been pressured or penalized for their use of the Dissent Channel, that negative comments have been made in their evaluation reports because of their use of the Dissent Channel, that the transmission of their Dissent Channel message has been deliberately delayed or prevented, that the existence of their Dissent Channel messages has been divulged to unauthorized personnel, or that the protection of their Dissent Channel message has been jeopardized by improper treatment, should make a report to the Inspector Generals Office via the OIG Channel, with copies to the Director of S/P. S/P will inform the Under Secretary for Management when such reports are received.
b. The Director of S/P and OIG will consult about any such allegations, and, if warranted, OIG will investigate and recommend action to the senior officers of the Department or appropriate agency (e.g., USAID). Officers or employees found to have engaged in acts of reprisal or retaliation against Dissent Channel users, or who have improperly divulged the use of the channel by discussing the content or identifying the user to unauthorized personnel, will be subject to disciplinary action, which may include administrative (such as a letter of reprimand, suspension, or termination), civil and, in rare cases, criminal penalties.

(42,581 posts)In June, reports surfaced that a State Department dissent channel memo critical of President Obama's Syria policy was circulating. When asked about it during the daily press briefing, this is how Earnest responded: "the President approves of this well-established process at the State Department. There should be an opportunity for people who do have a dissent to register to do so. And that's a healthy part of the process. And, look, the President has long acknowledged how difficult the situation in Syria is, and so the President would certainly welcome new ideas that are put forward for confronting it."

(19,937 posts)WASHINGTON (AP) The White House clashed Monday with a large group of American diplomats who are voicing dissent with Donald Trump's temporary travel ban on citizens from seven Muslim majority countries, challenging them to resign if they aren't on board.
"They should either get with the program or they can go," Sean Spicer, Trump's press secretary, said.
In startling language, Spicer dismissed the criticism from what he called "career bureaucrats." While he later said Trump appreciates the work of public servants, Spicer said they should respect the desires of the American people and the importance Trump places on protecting the country.
"If somebody has a problem with that agenda, that does call into question whether they should continue in that post or not," Spicer said.
