Obama's Protections for L.G.B.T. Workers Will Remain Under Trump
Source: New York Times
The White House said on Monday that President Trump would leave in place a 2014 Obama administration order that created new workplace protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
In a statement issued in response to growing questions about whether Mr. Trump would reverse the Obama order, the White House said the president was proud to embrace gay rights.
"President Trump continues to be respectful and supportive of L.G.B.T.Q. rights, just as he was throughout the election," the statement said. "The president is proud to have been the first ever G.O.P. nominee to mention the L.G.B.T.Q. community in his nomination acceptance speech, pledging then to protect the community from violence and oppression."
The decision to keep the order, the statement added, was Mr. Trump's. It uses stronger language than any Republican president has before in favor of equal legal protections for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people, though that is not likely to quiet Mr. Trump's critics on the left.

Well, so he passed up one opportunity to be needlessly cruel, I suppose.

(7,581 posts)The right hand says, "I love the gays," and the left hand puts out an order that says you can discriminate due to religious beliefs.

(108,977 posts)His public stance on LBGTQ rights last year was the one thing that had me hoping he might be a secret progressive simply out to destroy the GOP.
I still had a faint glimmer of hope until he announced his cabinet picks.
Silly me, always the optimist.

(4,787 posts)Given that he appears to have no empathy whatsoever for other human beings, if the EO materializes, my guess is that this will undoubtedly be what they point to as proof that he's not a bigot.
However, I'm glad that the people who were impacted by PBO's actions can feel a little more secure for the time being.

(5,231 posts)Things are not going the way they thought, and fuel to the fire could tip the scales. Still, the Republicans in Congress are not going to like this one bit. Nor will the red states.
He is just making friends everywhere he goes, isn't he?

(4,759 posts)but he is not stupid enough during the present shit storm to sign an executive order saying that it is once again okay to discriminate against gays in the workplace. It will be subtle but the homophobes including Pence will get their pony. Wait for the executive order on religious liberties/freedoms.

"This will get him just enough goodwill from LGBTQ people that they won't care as much about other, worse things that he does"
-highly likely this paraphrases the thoughts running through Steve Bannon's head

(4,558 posts)As you know, though, we don't all fit into one nice neat jello mold.
For most of us, we see this exactly for the ploy it is, but before I logged into DU this morning, I had seen several versions of this article on my wall just to "show me" that he's not that bad for us...
I do think the log cabiners, and fiscal con's among us will take this bait.
Behind the Aegis
(53,955 posts)However, the post is offensive because it isn't talking about right-wingers, Log Cabin, or otherwise, is it? No, it isn't because it is saying "divide and conquer". Those people were never on the sides of others. That post is talking about people like YOU and ME. So, you going to take the bait? I am not.

Behind the Aegis
(53,955 posts)If you were truly referring to their reasoning, then it shouldn't have been written as "This will get him just enough goodwill from LGBTQ people..." but rather as "They think this will get him just enough goodwill from LGBTQ people..." because without the subject, as in your version, it appears to be your opinion and is very offensive.

(53,955 posts)WTF?!
News flash: MOST homophobes are STRAIGHT!
Also, your "reasoning" as to why he might be a "closet 'mo", are fucking offensive. Ever think the behavior he is trying to repress is deep hate for mankind as a whole?
Question for you: you think Jeff Sessions is secretly black/or wants to be black? Think that might explain his racism?
Do you see how stupid that sounds?

(15,285 posts)Don't get offended. There are homosexuals/lesbians/transgenders who cannot admit to themselves what they are. That is all I am asking, is Bannon one of those people?
Behind the Aegis
(53,955 posts)Don't get offended, but most homophobes are straight and many can't seem to admit it. Also, your statement was offensive because you are "asking" about his SO based on stereotypes, not anything substantial.

What about medical rights, loans, housing, education, adoption, legally keeping their children, rights not to get beaten or murdered, and marriage. One law may very well be made obsolete by another law particularly when right to religion laws are made. Right to religion laws are only going to be right to fundamentalist Christian laws only.
