Serving 14-day sentence, inmate forced to deliver baby on jail cell floor: Ive been in total shock

Source: FOX6News

MACOMB COUNTY, Michigan — A woman who was eight months pregnant ended up giving birth on a jail cell floor in Michigan.

Jessica Preston was pulled over for having a rosary hanging from her rear-view mirror. She was also driving on a suspended license — taken away after she failed to pay a speeding ticket.

Judge Suzanne Faunce gave Preston a $10,000 bond, and sent her to jail for 14 days.

The judge could not comment, but the court administrator said the judge looked not only at the current charge, but all of Preston’s previous court history when determining bond. In the past, she had a record of drug abuse and outstanding warrants for failing to appear in court.

2. Sickening

The masses are inhuman to the system.

And it's worse than you think. This poor girl was made to stay in jail after she gave birth, they wouldn't take her to a hospital.

17. So despite the law being very clear

about what happens when in an inmate gets sick or something medially occurs. They must be brought to hospital, who ever is running that joke of a jail needs to send some time in there without there meds.

Unbelievable.

4. In many states, yes.

Technically, anything hanging from your mirror obstructs your vision, making it illegal.
Most of the time it is not enforced, but it is a valid excuse to be pulled over.

9. And in this case it was good she was pulled over, suspended license.

What happened AFTER she was arrested, however, will probably land her a pretty significant settlement that'll support her dirty-jail-floor-born baby. Criminal negligence by the jailers. Jesus, to ignore the cries of a woman in fucking labor!

There is obviously a very serious problem with the jail.

38. No, that would be if I was demanding all or most of it go into a trustfund over which she

have no control over that doles it out to her.
But regardless how they do it or how much she gets she does deserve compensation as the jail officials were completely negligent.

43. Law enforcement in this location is seriously upside down

RE: "And in this case it was good she was pulled over, suspended license."
No, not really. Her license was likely suspended for failure to pay her other fines.
Not having the resources to pay regressive government fines doesn't negate your ability to drive.
If you're working poor and having to keep a job and balance family, financial and legal obligations like risking losing the job by waiting hours to appear in court to beg for forbearance on fines, actions like these ruin the lives of otherwise good people.

Jail time because 'your papers aren't in order'.
Next they'll be saying things like you can't travel because 'your papers aren't in order'. Oh wait...
Maybe I can't go to recess until my mommy signs my report card as well.

BTW all the folks who commented blamed her which I guess isn't a shock since it's a foxnews site.

26. i once got a ticket for having one of those license plate frames.

in new jersey at least, they cannot obstruct *any part* of the lettering on the plate -- that includes the "garden state" part!

so, yes, the actual tag number and "new jersey" was clear as day, but the dealer-installed plate frame obscured about 1/8th of the "garden state" lettering, so i got pulled over and a ticket.

musta had a quota or something.

Sampling of items I used to hang on my rearview mirror in high school/college (but not all at once):

Obnoxious air fresheners (multiple)
Sweatbands
Lanyards (multiple)
Keychains
A plush tiger's tail from Exxon
A plush Sonic the Hedgehog
Old CDs with a string through them
An amethyst crystal
A jade pendant
A lace leg garter from a current girlfriend
A Victoria's Secret bra from an ex-girlfriend

I'm just glad I live nowhere near Michigan...

30. Its just not Michigan, Holy Shit went to Orlando, Florida around 20 years ago....

I didn't know my brother had gotten a PARKING ticket while he borrowed my car. Got pulled over at a DWI check point and they ran my plate and Holy Fuck, You would of thought I was a murderer from another state. My license was suspended and I didn't know since I was on a 4 month vacation sort of, Couldn't bail myself out of a 15.000 bond even though I had the funds available if I could of used my credit card or debt card. Truth is I sat in that fucking jail for almost a month until I let a complete stranger who was a inmate with me sign my wallet out and use my debit card. Left Orlando and pointed my middle finger at florida after paying another 2100.00 for storage fees. Got my license straightened out paid a small fine and now the mention of Orlando gives me a feeling hard to describe whenever someone mentions it.

34. Or visible. I had a car designed to have a visible license plate light; got 18 stops in 19 months

Fifteen okay, fine, your license is good, bye now, we're watching you. Four fix-it tickets, all four dismissed because there was nothing to fix. Eventually, the judge gave me a letter to keep in the car and hand to the cop pulling me over because I had no control over the perfectly legal design of the license plate light.

All were harassment stops -- I lived in the brown neighborhood, drove a (mechanically sound, visually trashed) beater, and as a 21 year old grad student, was going through a territorial, far-left bumper-sticker and art-car phase. And lived in a town run by and copped by far-right Mormon asshats.

Those were the car stops. I got weekly walking stop and sexual assaults, too, because I tended to be nocturnal (I lived in a desert) and walked to the grocery or convenience store after the big ball of fiery gas went away.

I have a lot of sympathy for the position that there's no such thing as Officer Friendly, and policing exists to preserve and extend the property rights of those in power.

I live in a county on the other side of the state. The PD here isn't as bad, I think they have more important things to do then harass drivers with things hanging from their mirrors.

The court administrator claims Judge "felt that it would be in the woman and her baby’s best interests to be locked up, and that the judge had never imagined that pregnant woman would not be taken to a hospital in case she went into labor behind the bars."

Judge comes from Republican family - father and sister are judges. She was former prosecutor.
