Federal immigration raids net many without criminal records, sowing fear

Oscar Ramirez and Thermon Brewster walked out of the Rising Hope United Methodist Mission Church just before 7 a.m. — when those who sleep at its homeless shelter must leave for the day.

Outside the church in the Alexandria section of Fairfax County, Va., U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents were waiting.

As the two men and others crossed the street toward a shopping center on Feb. 8, about a dozen ICE agents ordered them up against the wall of a grocery store, questioning them about their immigration status. According to Ramirez and Brewster, the ICE agents then indiscriminately arrested seven of the homeless men — all of them Hispanic — and packed them into a van full of other detainees.

ICE tells it differently: An ICE official said officers approached the group, questioned them about a “potential target” and arrested two men, including a legal permanent resident of the United States. Both had been identified in the shopping center parking lot as “criminal aliens amenable to removable”— meaning deportation.

Low-level, low wage positions, sometimes off the books below minimum wage
work that few American citizens will do. I'm thinking busboys, dishwashers,
lawn maintenance, construction ... certainly there are other occupations.

America will grind to a halt.

better than below minimum wage pay. And they'll have to protect the health and safety of their employees, because American citizens that work from them can't be silenced with threats of deportation. Violations to workers rights will actually mean something.

How do you get crops out of the ground without using pretty much slave labor? Bring back the good ol' days of 1840's? Just use prison inmates?
Undocumented immigrants are an easy to exploit workforce. They can't complain about unsafe or unscrupulous practices, because of deportation hanging over their heads. If my boss here started acting like a bastard, I could go down to the EEOC or labor board and raise hell.
I don't make much, but I'm willing to pay more for food if it'll give the people picking and processing it a life.

Have you ever worked construction? Ever notice how safety regulations are routinely ignored? The boss doesn't provide safety harnesses for roofers, roofers don't complain, they just climb up on the roof . . . to complain means you lose your job. Ditto for unsafe equipment and machinery. No one complains and those who do are without a job.

Sean Spicer states this is "100 untrue". I think the AP is more reliable than the White House on this. Is this another leak??? I can only envision massive protests that will result in a military crackdown. 45 is just that crazy and Bannon would get a big ol' woody over calling for martial law. This is terrifying.
