Russia, China Veto Sanctions On Syria

Russia and China vetoed a new U.N. Security Council resolution Thursday that would have imposed new sanctions on the Syrian regime.

Western countries have been pushing for a resolution that threatens sanctions against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad if government forces don't stop attacks.

However, Russia has opposed any international effort that would blame, punish or change the leadership of the Syrian government. Russia and China have vetoed two previous draft resolutions in the U.N. Security Council, leading to accusations that Russia is protecting the Syrian regime.

The resolution also calls for renewing the 300-member U.N. observer mission for 45 days after it was suspended because of violence.

In the past the US has supported innumerable dictators who ruled through force and terror against their populations. Nice to be on the other side of that equation for a change.

I hope they back this up with food, medical, and fuel assistance to the people of Syria, while continuing to offer to facilitate negotiation between all sides of the internal conflict.

Unfortunately, the insurgents have chosen to escalate, and now the Syrian state will literally have no choice but to use its full arsenal to counterattack. I don't blame them one bit.

I know that the Republicans criticized lots of left-wingers as "pro-Saddam" back in 2003 - there are shades of that here. I don't see any use of chemical weapons in Syria. I do, however, see IEDs, suicide bombers, destruction of public property, etc. I do not, however, think that supporters of terrorism in Syria should not be "tolerated" on a progressive site.

I mean, France opposed the US anti-Iraq resolution, so they were "supporting the dictator." And, interestingly, this was the perpetrator of Halabja. Bush was a true champion of human rights, no?
