Mexico parties join to demand campaign probe
MEXICO CITY Mexico's conservative National Action Party says it has "strong and conclusive evidence of the use of illicit funds" in the campaign of the winner of the July 1 presidential election, Enrique Pena Nieto.
National Action leader Gustavo Madero says his party is joining with the country's leftist parties to demand electoral authorities investigate the use of pre-paid debit cards purportedly used by Pena Nieto's campaign to distribute an estimated 108 million pesos ($8.2 million). That's about a third of all the money Pena Nieto was legally allowed to spend in the race.
Madero says electoral authorities should investigate whether front companies bought the cards to hide the origin of the money.
National Action is not seeking to overturn the presidential vote, but the leftist parties want the results invalidated.
