How about compensating ($$$) all the gay personnel who were kicked out because of the U.S. Military's discriminating policy? People who sign up for the military are either poor, and have no options in life, or they're freaks. We need to reign in our military spending and bring it home to our schools, our health care system, and the infrastructure of our country. NOW.

“People who sign up for the military are either poor, and have no options in life, or they're freaks.”

Care to back up that bigoted statement with some evidence?

The average solder is better educated: http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2006/11/education_and_t/

Is better paid: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080818153016AA1vGEe

Up to 75% of young American does not even qualify to join the military: http://www.military.com/NewsContent/0,13319,90736,00.html

I guess you must think me a freak then, because I joined and as a result, I received free healthcare, bought my first home with no down payment. (VA loan) and my children graduated from collage with no student loan debit. (9/11 GI Bill)

Happy to burst your bubble, but facts are facts, the military are a select group of people who will not take just any one. Hate what the military does all you want, but direct that hate towards the President and Congress, not the soldier.

While I agree with this in principal, I am concerned with the precedant. The military is apolitical and it should remain that way. What about a soldier in uniform protesting an abortion clinic; would we be ok with that? This is asking for trouble in my opinion.

It is, but it shouldn't be; and maybe one day, it won't be. It's a human rights issue, and that has only become politicized because we have chosen to do so.

Anyway, we have servicemembers, in uniform, being showcased at major sporting events like the Super Bowl; jet fighter flyovers and everything. Nobody turns a hair when it is an all-American, money-making enterprise like the NFL. But when it is something like gay rights, people (like you, evidently) are worried about the "precedent"...

to promote breastfeeding?

The reasoning was that the military forbids using the uniform to promote any particular issue.

How does that jive with this decision?

One year at the Pride festival on Pennsylvania Avenue a friend of mine tapped me on the shoulder and said, "there's the bravest guy in this crowd."

He was in full uniform.

We went up and thanked him, wished him luck, and so on, but there was a note of trepidation behind what we all said, because that guy was taking a big, big risk, and everyone knew it.

He was doing it so that others, someday, wouldn't have to take that risk. I am so happy to see that day finally on the way! And I hope that guy got his bird.
