Hezbollah Is Blamed in Attack on Israeli Tourists in Bulgaria

Source: NY TIMES

BURGAS, Bulgaria — A senior American official confirmed Israel’s assertions on Thursday that the suicide bomber who killed five Israelis in an attack here on Wednesday was a member of a Hezbollah cell operating in Bulgaria.

The official said the current American intelligence assessment is that the bomber was “acting under broad guidance” to hit Israeli targets when the opportunity presented itself. That guidance was given to Hezbollah, a Lebanese militant group, by its primary sponsor, Iran, he said.

The attacks, the official said, were in retaliation for the assassinations of Iranian nuclear scientists by Israeli agents, something that Israel has neither confirmed nor denied. “This was tit for tat,” said the American official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the investigation was still underway.

The bombing comes at a time of heightened tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, which Tehran says is for peaceful purposes but Israel and the West say is a cover for developing weapons. The United States and Europe imposed sanctions this month aimed at crippling Iran’s vital oil industry, while Iran has sworn to exact revenge for the assassinations, as well as for cyber attacks on its nuclear industry.

7. Hard to believe the official "Party line" here.

The NY times calls this a "suicide bombing" but other sources seem to say that the bomb was placed underneath the bus:

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a bomb placed either underneath the bus or in its luggage compartment.

Either way, it's a bit hard to believe that in this day and age, a terrorist could make it all the way to Bulgaria, track down some Israeli tourists, manage to acquire explosives in that country, evade police, and blow himself up or plant explosives without being caught. It's hard to believe that a rag-tag outfit like Hezbollah could pull off something like this.

This seems to be yet another distraction that will be used to build up a war against the nation of Iran.

To begin with, the fact that he finger was so quickly pointed at Iran seems a bit questionable. However given that the war-drums in Washington and Tel-Aviv have been beating against Iran for some time now, the quick accusations are even more suspect. Iran would hardly benefit from committing random acts of terrorism around the word. Such attacks would do nothing for Iran but to inflame public opinion against them (and generating sympathy for Israel), justifying war, and the Iranians probably know that.

On the other hand, given that America is already sympathetic to Israelis, and halfway to war with Iran, trying to pin this on Iran is a good ploy to justify another war.

It is still early, so there are all kinds of conflicting reports on where the explosion took place exactly. Was it under the bus? In the luggage compartment? Or was it at the front of the bus?

I can't speak to your opinion other than you really don't seem to know much about Hizb'allah. It is far from "rag-tag." Al-Quaida would be more of a rag-tag group, at this point. As for "make it all the way to Bulgaria" and the rest that follows seems to me to be nothing but naivete.

Is it another distraction? Possibly. Ever consider it was at the behest of Iran as part of the distraction?

Of course the fingers immediately pointed toward Iran. It is no different than when something happens in an Arab/Muslim country and the finger automatically points at Israel or the US, or both. So using that as some sort of proof is absurd. I find it amusing, in the "sad" way, not the "ha-ha" way, you made such a comment like: "Iran would hardly benefit from committing random acts of terrorism around the word." They would not benefit from them if they were caught! As for generating sympathy for Israel.... Yeah, I see it oozing all over this site, the liberal newspapers and media. While it may generate some, it won't last long.

There is another possibility that another party is involved, but because everyone is so mired in pointing fingers instead of gathering (or waiting for) facts, it gets overlooked. I have seen many situations between two warring parties who are so busy blaming each other, they don't see when they are manipulated by a third individual (or group). I say "individual" because I am talking about interpersonal "wars" and not full-scale (or even cold or luke-warm ones) wars between nation-states.

Huh? Not the only silly in this post, but describing a group that gets about $200 million a year in funding and controls actual territory as "rag tag" is the silliest.

10. The cold blooded murder of innocent Jewish civilians brings bigots and haters out of the woodwork
Fri Jul 20, 2012, 03:09 AM
Jul 2012

Jews have been hated by non-Jews for as long as there has been recorded history, yet even today there are hateful bigots denying the historical and current suffering of the Jewish race and trying to blame the victim.

Anyhow if Israel says that Iran did it, I believe them. There is no reason (apart from rabid antisemitism) to believe that Israel would lie about the murder of their own civilians just to start a war. Alleging this is a blood libel akin to the oldest forms of anti-semitism.

Israel has shown itself to be, in spite of vicious propaganda against it for the last 60 years, a benevolent democratic state. Even after being attacked just hours after declaring independence, several infitadas later, decades of confronting terror and hate, they are still the freest nation in the region.

Iran by contrast cannot be trusted. Their entire doctrine on which there country is based is based on deception, lies, murder, and fear. And lest we forget, its president is a notorious Holocaust denier who has repeatedly threatened to use Iran's stockpile of nuclear weapons against Israel.

Of course the Israel haters (or Iran apologists: there really is no difference) will claim that Iran isn't the real problem and try to blame the Jews. It doesn't take very much to see through this vile and despicable game of hate and antisemitism, but then again most people only see what they want to see.

Iran is just trying to pick a fight. That's why it says that the rigors that its victims have been called upon to undergo have been amply justified in the sphere of concrete achievement. In contrast, if we let Iran rub salt into our wounds, civilization itself will fall.

If our eventual goal is to act honorably, then we must consider various means to that end. I've tried to explain to Iran's pompous, homophobic emissaries that it behooves all of us to understand that evidence exists to suggest that Iran lives in a mental and emotional la-la land. As could be expected, they were a bit slow on the uptake. I just couldn't get them to comprehend that if Iran wants to be taken seriously, it should counter the arguments in this letter with facts, not illogical panaceas, personal anecdotes, or insults. "

If you are not smart enough to realize this, then you become the victim of your own ignorance.

12. Exactly what "stockpile of nuclear weapons" did Iran say that they would use against Israel?

Khameini has repeatedly said that Iran doesn't want to have a nuclear bomb. Even if he was lying, they are years away from developing a nuclear weapon, with sanctions making it all that more difficult for them to obtain the parts and technology needed.

Also, the claim that Ahmadinejad threatened to wipe Israel off the map has been debunked again and again:

First the so called "evidence" that Iran doesn't want a bomb is coming from Iranian state media quoting the Supreme leader. We all know how reliable presstv is, and furthermore it's a bit disturbing that you don't think that Khameini is lying. The chance of him lying via taqiyya (a documented practice in Shi'ite Islam) is far, far greater than him telling the truth.

Second, absense of evidence is not evidence of absense. Just because no WMD's have been found in Iran *yet* doesn't mean that they don't have them and aren't trying to acquire them in one way or another. It would be naive to assume that a theocratic religious fundamentalist dictatorship which stones women and hangs gay people would be anything but reasonable.

Third the lie that I'm-a-nut-job/DinnerJacket "didn't" say that he was going to wipe Israel off the map has been debunked again and again. The lie was first thought up by David Duke (who attended DinnerJacket's Holocaust Denial hatefest) and then spread around on conspiracy websites. There's no reliable news source that has translated it differently. The most reliable authority on Middle East media, MEMRI, also translated it as "wipe Israel off the map". So when it comes down to believing a reputable translator of Middle East media vs. white supremacists and conspiracy hacks, who am I supposed to believe.

I am starting to believe that you are a hack for the Iranian government or at least a closet Islamist. Only a Iranian hack would make such laughable statements and expect to be taken seriously.

13. Prosecutor: Bulgaria bomber tried to rent car
Fri Jul 20, 2012, 06:07 AM
Jul 2012

SOFIA, Bulgaria (AP) -- A man believed to have carried out a suicide attack on a bus full of Israeli vacationers had a short haircut, not the long hair seen in a security video, and tried to rent a car in the days before the bombing but was turned down because his ID appeared suspicious, a Bulgarian prosecutor said Friday.

Authorities looking for clues as to the identity of the man suspected of killing himself and six others are using his fingerprints, his DNA and his fake Michigan driver's license.

Security camera footage from before the attack showed the suspected bomber wandering in and out of the terminal, wearing a baseball cap over long hair, and a T-shirt, and plaid shorts, with a bulky backpack believed to contain the bomb.

>

Prosecutor Kalina Chapkanova said in a TV interview that before the attack a man believed to be the bomber tried to rent a car in the town of Pomorie, near the site of the bombing. She said the owner of the rental agency, whom she would not identify, become suspicious of his license and refused to conclude the deal.
