ROCHESTER, Minn. - Authorities have removed a 3-foot-long pipe bomb from a vehicle on the Mayo Clinic campus in Rochester.

Traffic near the clinic was diverted Thursday as authorities removed the pipe bomb from the trunk of a vehicle inside the Generose Building parking ramp on the Saint Marys Hospital campus.

The pipe weighed 50 to 60 pounds and had caps on each end and a wick. Crews pried open the trunk and took the bomb to a safe location to detonate it.

Police say late Thursday morning a female relative of a patient found the bomb on the patient's property in Winona County. That relative then decided to bring it with her in the trunk of her car to Saint Marys Hospital and return it to the patient. However, she changed her mind and contacted security once she arrived.

"Got a call of an unknown device in a car in the Mayo parking lot," says Rochester Police Sergeant, Steve Thompson.

At this point, no arrests have been made, including the woman who brought that pipe bomb. We're told she never made any threats. Police say Winona County will investigate to see if any charges should be filed.

Possibly. But obviously she was suspicious.

I believe the Generose building is behind St. Marys, and I think it is for in and out patient mental health issues.

I certainly am glad nobody was hurt, and I hope they get to the bottom of it.
