Calif. neighbor of Colo. suspect says he was shy

Source: AP via WRAL TV news

"SAN DIEGO — Those who knew the 24-year-old man in custody for the mass shooting at a Colorado movie theater describe him as a shy, intelligent person raised in California by parents who were active in their well-to-do suburban neighborhood.

James Holmes, who was studying neuroscience in a Ph.D. program in Colorado, grew up in San Diego, where his parents still live on a quiet, street of two-story homes with red tile roofs. He played soccer at Westview High School and ran cross country before going to college.

Neighbors say the family belonged to a Presbyterian church and hosted a Christmas party for residents. Many families choose the San Diego neighborhood because it is part of the well-regarded Poway Unified School District, one of the best in California.

On Friday morning, police escorted the suspect's father, a manager of a software company, from their San Diego home. The mother, a nurse, stayed inside, receiving family visitors who came to offer support. The suspect also has a younger sister."

It must be awful to awake to the news that your son is responsible for the death of 12 people. It would wreck me if I was his parent - wondering what I did wrong to make him that way.

Awful all around.

The father out of his home but left the mother behind. Could he have had some knowledge or owned some of the guns used in the shooting? The word "escorted" indicates against his will.

I could be making too much out of the use of "escorted by police " rather than "left with police".

may be lurking in order to take potshots at the family who "raised a monster."

I have no idea what was wrong with their kid, but once a kid is 24, it's not like you can have them thrown in a mental institution just on your say-so. Nor can you keep your kid on his meds by force. So far, whether the family is Pub or Dem, it sounds like James was raised well and, IMHO, suffers from something like schizophrenia. Paranoid type. But I'm just some idiot on a message board, and I should shut up.

I doubt anyone in that neighborhood voted for a democrat since JFK.

That neighborhood was completely undeveloped until the mid-1980s. CORRECTION: It was undeveloped until after 2000.

It was unspoiled hills and canyons, farms, and coastal sage scrub with a few Torrey Pine trees.

These 1%'s all were too busy figuring out ways to screw us making buttloads of money that they screwed the deuce raising their kids. That's the point.

I am quite sure of that. (I'm sure they didn't vote for JFK in 1960 either.)

this is going to destroy them.

Lost a son in several ways. And they likely won't receive much sympathy.
