Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Monday called for President Donald Trump to apologize for claiming, without proof, that President Barack Obama "wiretapped" Trump Tower before the 2016 election.
"The FBI director has now confirmed what members from both parties in both the House and the Senate have said: President Obama did not order a wiretap on Trump Tower," Schumer said in a statement. "President Trump owes the American people and President Obama more than just an explanation, but an apology."
FBI Director James Comey on Monday said he had "no information" to support Trump's unsubstantiated claims.
"I have no information that supports those tweets, and we looked carefully inside the FBI," he told the House Intelligence Committee. "The Department of Justice has asked me to share with you that the answers are the same for the Department of Justice and all its components. The Department has no information that supports those tweets."

Schumer: Trump Camp, Russia Probe Must Proceed 'Without Any Interference'
ByMATT SHUHAMPublishedMARCH 20, 2017, 11:21 AM EDT
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) responded Monday to FBI Director James Comeys confirmation that the FBI was investigating possible coordination between members of the Trump campaign and Russian officials during the 2016 election, saying that the investigation must proceed without any interference, meddling, or political pressure of any kind whatsoever."
The Department of Justice and Trump administration must allow Director Comeys investigation to move forward without any interference, meddling, or political pressure of any kind whatsoever, Schumer wrote in a statement.
The possibility of coordination between the Trump campaign and Russian officials is a serious, serious matter. The investigation must be fair, independent, and impartial in every way, and the FBI must be allowed to follow the facts wherever they may lead.
In testimony on Monday to the House Intelligence Committee, which has been investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including any intelligence regarding links between Russia and individuals associated with political campaigns, Comey confirmed that the FBI was investigating possible ties between Trump associates and Russian officials.
