In Georgia, a Democrat's 'Make Trump Furious' campaign rattles Republicans

After the crushing electoral losses that swept Donald Trump into the White House and sealed Republican control of the U.S. Congress, the Democrats' road to recovery winds through the leafy, well-heeled suburbs of north Atlanta.
Here, Democrats are threatening a stunning special election upset that could signal how well the party can turn Trump's low approval ratings into political gains. And they appear to have an ally in the April 18 vote: Trump himself.
In the first congressional election of the Trump era, a wave of grassroots anti-Trump fervor has positioned Democrat Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old political newcomer, to possibly capture a House of Representatives seat held by Republicans for decades, one of 24 seats Democrats need nationwide to reclaim the House.
"The grassroots intensity here is electric, and its because folks are concerned that what is happening in Washington doesnt represent our values," Ossoff said in an interview. "This is a chance for this community to stand up and make a statement about what we believe."

(81,193 posts)There's a handful of possibilities this month! James Thompson in Kansas - THIS TUESDAY! Running for Mike Pompeo's seat.
There's Jon Ossoff here in a few more days.
And there's Rob Quist in Montana also coming up very soon, to flip Zinke's seat from Red to True BLUE!
Anybody who can help them out, go for it!

They are everywhere.

(779 posts)I see them too. Have also seen them in affluent North Druid Hills which I think is outside the district, but I bet they are donating.

Besides, there are more Dems than CONS just anyway so the only way we ever do poorly is when we don't bother to show up.

Moving votes around between Hill, Moody, and Handel, and others, if they are still in the game. Perdue has endorsed Moody.
On edit: corrected Handel's name I wrote "Hanson".

(779 posts)I live just east of the district boundary. My conservative brother lives just west of the district. He has lived in the area longer than me, and tells me the Democrats are "pissing in the wind" trying to win that district. I do not think so. Sure, it is one of the more affluent districts. Those rich and upper middle class folks were certainly Romney's base, but not so much Trump's. I have driven all over that district, and there are plenty of less affluent areas too, and plenty of 1st and 2nd generation Americans especially in Northern Dekalb. This election is winnable if Dems can get out the vote.

(5,730 posts)I don't have much, but if we all just give a few bucks, we can overpower them. He had raised over $8.1 million a few days ago, the most ever. We need to take the Repubs out, one at a time, at every opportunity.
Most of the modern day Repubs are thugs, liars, and ideologues. These are not the Repubs like Gerald Ford, who had principles, even if I disagreed with their policies.

(9,726 posts)That result would make me extremely happy, but it is Georgia, after all. The Repukes are not interested in winning fairly, only in winning, and they'll do anything and everything to win.

(79,294 posts)After 10 days of in-person early voting, numbers continue to look good for Ossoff.
Democrats continued to outpace Republicans in voter turnout in the second week of early voting for the special election to fill the seat in Georgias sixth congressional district.
Early voting doesnt necessarily indicate final outcome, but the trend is good news for 30-year-old Jon Ossoff, who is running for a seat Tom Price vacated when he became Health and Human Services Secretary. The seat has long been Republican and was once held by former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.
President Donald Trump narrowly defeated his Democratic rival Hillary Clinton in the sixth district and Democrats see it as an opportunity to flip a GOP seat and to provide a referendum on his presidency so far.

(1,751 posts)I firmly believe a contributing factor to HRC's loss was the proliferation of early voting in favor of Dems. The news kept beating that drum and repukes saw that. They knew they had to get out and vote. Nothing to be done about it more voting is far better than less but it's a factor which can't be ignored.

Sounds like they have to have a primary first
MarvinGardens
(779 posts)It's a free for all, no primary. If no one gets more than 50%, there will be a run off in June between the top two vote getters. Likely it'll be Ossoff against one of the more prominent Republicans. But wouldn't it be something if Ossoff could win outright?

(1,103 posts)their RECORDS. Rethugs try anything and may sound like a Dem just to get elected just to get into office. And only then show their true colors. Look at their record, for heavens sake. That will show what they really are about. Rethugs don't do anything for anyone except themselves. See exactly what they have actually DONE. And forget the promises.

(340 posts)Thanks for your concern, but Jon Ossoff worked for John Lewis for years, and has his endorsement. And I trust John Lewis.
And so what if he isn't 100% pure left wing? It's a red district. We have to be strategic. We can run Karl Marx everywhere and win.

Several canvassers have come to the door, lots of Ossoff signs in the neighborhood. This area is all about the schools and the Devos pick is hurting the Orange Asshole.
