A majority of Americans support President Donald Trumps decision to launch missile strikes last week against the regime of Syrian dictator Bashar Assad, a new CBS News poll released Monday morning shows.
That same poll showed an uptick in Trumps approval rating, which climbed to 43 percent in the survey released Monday, since last weeks missile strikes. Forty-nine percent of those polled said they disapprove of the presidents job performance.
On the question of Trumps order to launch Tomahawk missiles at a Syrian military air base, 57 percent of respondents said they support the move. But there is little appetite for more U.S. military intervention beyond airstrikes, with only 18 percent of those polled voicing support for the use of ground troops in Syria.
Seventy percent said that Trump must seek Congressional approval before taking additional action against Syria. Of those polled who identified as Republicans, more than 50 percent said further military steps by the president should come with the say-so of Capitol Hill.

(20,171 posts)if asked, "Do you approve of informing (Syrian ally) Russia prior to the missile launch?
"Do you approve of Trump bombing Syria without prior approval of Congress when there was no imminent threat to the US?"

(5,272 posts)Unless he has that shit figured out, condoning, even praising his actions is pandering of the highest order to the whole "war time President" bs. Time to shut our mouths and support his unsurprisingly irresponsible actions.

(4,490 posts)The majority of people just can't make intellegent decisions. They can't think past the most shallow and reactionary feelings. It makes Russia's destabilization campaign much easier than it should be.
It's not entirely their fault, as Conservatives have consistently undermined our educational system at every oppourtunity. They want a stupid and lazy electorate, and are screwing all of us (including themselves) in the process.

(5,491 posts)Assad is a vile dictator, but this is still cowardice. It's supporting war with no personal investment.
Who would still support bombing Syria if Assad had anti-ship missiles that could fire back? How about if Assad also had carriers, and cruise missiles that could hit American cities?

(5,790 posts)We're never happier than when we are bombing an Arabic nation or invading a relatively defenseless nation in the Caribbean or Latin America.
I do think some people were genuinely appalled by the gassing; saw the photos; and supported the strike. I think others are just happy to see us shot off $70M in very expensive fireworks. Given that everyone had two hours warning, that's what it amounted to.
The same polls show we don't want troops on the ground, and we sure as Hell don't want to take refugees. So I assume the theory is we bomb him to the peace table. Last week, it seemed like we were willing to award Assad the win in the Syrian Civil War (presumably in exchange for help with ISIS). Curious to know whether he went off-script, or if this is all theater.
