World Cup 2026: USA, Canada & Mexico to make joint bid

Source: BBC

The United States, Canada and Mexico have announced they will make a joint bid to host the 2026 World Cup.

It will be the first tournament after the expansion from 32 teams to 48 and, if successful, would be the first time a World Cup has been shared by three hosts.

The proposal would be for the USA to host 60 matches, with 10 games each in Canada and Mexico.

The decision on who will host the event will be made in 2020.

That is three years later than originally scheduled because of corruption allegations surrounding the awarding of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups to Russia and Qatar.

The USA staged the 1994 World Cup, which had the highest average attendance in the tournament's history, while Mexico was the first nation to host the event twice, in 1970 and 1986. Canada hosted the 2015 women's World Cup.

It's a joint bid. The US, Canada and Mexico combined all have the necessary infrastructure to be ready with limited problems
Plus Hair Douchengroper will be out of office. So they can fling that in his (jerk)face

I'm not sure if our government has anything to do with the bidding process. I'm pretty sure the USOC handles it and by 2026 we should have a human in the WH again.

I don't know what type of bid we are going to make, but taxpayers shouldn't be paying for a new stadium. MLS can pay for one, and I'd even be ok if they did it with revenue bonds, but no direct taxpayer subsidies.

We did need to sod the Silverdome, making it the first indoor stadium with natural grass (for about a month).

Considering all the NFL stadiums, NCAA Div I stadiums and soccer only stadiums that have been built recently, we probably have plenty of venues with adequate seating capacity.

I really like this idea. Shared costs and very little infrastructure needed, at least in this country. I would imagine both Mexico and Canada are in pretty good shape, too. We'd have to do somethings but not go all crazy like Brazil or South Africa.

110,000 seats, convenient to a major airport, very international population in Metro Detroit and Ann Arbor, lots of local hotel space, experienced at major events including games between some of the biggest soccer teams in the world - Real Madrid v Manchester United in 2014 (http://www.sbnation.com/soccer/2014/8/3/5964309/manchester-united-vs-real-madrid-michigan-stadium-us-soccer-record) and Real Madrid v Chelsea FC 2016 (http://www.freep.com/story/sports/2016/03/22/champions-cup-soccer-michigan-stadium/82113492/)

It's the one thing that gets built. How many new NFL stadiums do we have in this country? And they're set to build new ones in Atlanta, Las Vegas, and L.A.

I'd rather our 3 countries host the world cup and raise the profile of soccer in USA and Canada instead of hosting another money losing Olympics.

Korea and Japan have done a joint hosting in 2002.

Countries want the world cup so bad they often bribe people to win the bid and kill slave laborers to build the stadiums in Qatar.
