Trump says "someone should look into who paid for" tax return rallies
Source: CBS News
CHICAGO -- President Donald Trump said someone should look into who paid for rallies held across the country Saturday that urged him to release his tax returns.
<snip>
I did what was an almost an impossible thing to do for a Republican-easily won the Electoral College! he tweeted. Now Tax Returns are brought up again?
Mr. Trump was the first major-party nominee in more than 40 years not to release his returns and he reneged on a campaign commitment to release them. He said they were being audited.
Thousands of sign-waving, chanting protesters marched Saturday through streets across America, demanding that the president release his tax returns so the public can examine his business ties and determine whether he has links to foreign powers.

(4,033 posts)I confess, I helped pay for the Cincinnati rally.
It is 17 miles from my home to where I parked. My car gets about 22 MPG and gas is currently around $2.69/gal. Cost: $4.00
Poster board (10 pack) from Staples $6.49
Set of Markers: (8 pack) from Staples: $8.99
Total Contribution to march: $19.48
(Seeing all the others, both Republican and Democrat marching together, wanting to know how big a crook you really are: PRICELESS)

(19,187 posts)between the paid Russians on twitter, facebook, etc. and the paid Trump "supporters", he can't believe that anyone is motivated by anything other than money.
The old adage, "you see in others what you see in yourself" applies mightily here. His remarks during the Presidential campaign about the election being "fixed" were spot on, because he knew HE was complicit in aiding the Russians to do their dirty work.

(35,282 posts)306 to 232 is "easily won" by most interpretations.
It wasn't close at that level, whatever it was lower down in the process.
It pays to be aware of both facts, and not let one subsume the other.
The EC was, among other things, the price of the union. It was compromise that's binding for as long as we uphold the document it's codified in. The Civil War was fought to defend the Constitution and an interpretation of it, and most of the time we like that interpretation. Except when it's a short-term problem, then we hate it. The only real principle is "what's in our interests as we see them right this minute." That's no way to plan for progeny. In fact, it's a sure way to get what's unexpected (which means, at times, progeny).
Americans got no patience and have gone to a short-term view to too great an extent. "Gee, Mr. Wizard, I do, too, take the long view. I already have plans for this Tuesday night, and it's only Sunday!" A PhD would say that he had plans for a year and two days from the today's date last year.

And the 306 to 232 vote electoral college margin depended on that thin 78,000 vote margin; without that 78,000 Trump vote margin, the big electoral college margin would have disappeared and gone the other way -- 260 to 278.
As for the electoral college problem (a compromise to give slave-holding states more clout, among other reasons but that was a crucial reason), it's not a short term problem -- on a per-capita or per-voter basis it favors smaller population states over larger population states, and that significantly favors Republicans / conservatives. So it will be a headwind for Democrats for likely the next several presidential elections, at least.

(11,514 posts)That's like saying that people from Detroit only get a half vote when electing the governor, but everyone else gets a full vote. Democrats will always be at a disadvantage.

(4,558 posts)I'd posted down thread as well, but 2016 was supposed to be an easy year for them, AND they were supposed to increase their numbers in both the Senate and the House.
We'd just had 8 years with a great Democratic Party POTUS. Not since FDR has the Democratic Party maintained the POTUS more than the 2 terms (8 years) without it switching parties after. Bush Sr. after Reagan is the only exception on their side. Traditionally, after 1 party holds the POTUS for 8 years, they also lose House and Senate seats, in 2016 we picked up 2 seats in the Senate, and 6 in the house. Yes, that wasn't enough to take the majority in either, but the very fact that they lost seats in that election isn't something that supports their narrative at all.

(9,090 posts)instead of getting a thunderous unanimous "get out of here" laugh is because we let 1000 radio stations repeat it all over the country over and over, ignored by the protestors and their supporters.
if protestors really want to get serious attention they should start taking them to the contalk stations and the 88 universities that support them

(4,558 posts)... the Electoral College!
I understand that this is more of a thread on #45 once again calling for a false investigation with false accusations.
However, the quote that really just sticks in my gut here is "I did what was an almost an impossible thing to do for a Republican-easily won the Electoral College!
This is a narrative that most on the right, and many on the left seem to want to swallow hook line and sinker.
This was NOT supposed to be a hard year for them. It wasn't SUPPOSED to be a surprise upset that he won.
We had just had 8 years of a Democrat in the Oval Office. People need to remember that not since FDR has the Democratic party held the Presidency for more than 8 years (2 terms). The 'cons have only had one exception in Reagan who was followed by Bush Sr..
Traditionally, after 8 years of either party holding the POTUS, they lose the office to the other party AND lose seats in the house and Senate.
The REAL upset is that they almost lost, and did lose the popular vote by the largest margin of anyone who has won the electoral college. They may have held the Senate and the House, but they actually lost 2 seats in the Senate, and lost 6 seats in the House.
2016 was NOT the mandate win that they'd love for us to believe, and we really need to stop allowing that particular narrative to pass.

Also, such a bullshit thing to say it is nearly impossible for a republican to win the electoral college. Hmm, considering he is the 4th republican president since 1980 and we've only had 2 dem presidents since then, I'd say the republicans have the upper hand when it comes to the electoral college.
