UPDATED: Sessions "Amazed' Judge On "An Island In The Pacific' Blocked Trump Travel Ban

Source: Talking Points Memo

By ALLEGRA KIRKLAND Published APRIL 20, 2017, 3:10 PM EDT

Attorney General Jeff Sessions can’t believe that a federal judge based on “an island in the Pacific”—what the rest of us simply call Hawaii—was able to block President Donald Trump’s executive order barring immigrants from a handful of majority-Muslim countries.

“We are confident that the President will prevail on appeal and particularly in the Supreme Court, if not the Ninth Circuit,” Sessions said in a Wednesday night interview on “The Mark Levin” radio show, first flagged by CNN’s KFILE. “So this is a huge matter. I really am amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the President of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and Constitutional power.”

U.S. District Court Judge Derrick Watson in March blocked a revised version of the travel ban hours before it was set to go into effect, arguing that its primary purpose remained “suspending the entry of Muslims” rather than ensuring national security, as the Trump administration has insisted. Watson pointed to Trump team staffers’ frequent calls for a “Muslim ban,” made both during the campaign and at the start of his administration, in blocking the order.

Federal officials who are located on the mainland shared Watson’s interpretation. Judge Theodore Chuang of Maryland also issued an injunction against the revised travel ban, and the Democratic attorneys general of Washington, New York, Oregon and Massachusetts also sued in an attempt to block the order.

UPDATE:

Hawaii Dems Swiftly Hit Sessions For 'Island In The Pacific' Remark

By ALLEGRA KIRKLAND Published APRIL 20, 2017, 4:04 PM EDT

Hawaii’s Democratic senators on Thursday quickly went after Attorney General Jeff Sessions for questioning how a federal judge from the Aloha State, which he instead referred to as “an island in the Pacific,” was able to block the Trump administration’s travel ban.

“Hey Jeff Sessions, this #IslandinthePacific has been the 50th state for going on 58 years. And we won’t succumb to your dog whistle politics,” Sen. Mazie Hirono wrote on Twitter, adding that the attorney general’s remarks were “ignorant & dangerous.”

Sen. Brian Schatz also chimed in, urging Sessions to “have some respect” for his home state.

The attorney general made waves by telling conservative radio host Mark Levin on Wednesday that he was “amazed that a judge sitting on an island in the Pacific can issue an order that stops the President of the United States from what appears to be clearly his statutory and Constitutional power.”

by appearing on his show? Coretta Scott King warned us about Sessions, and so did Ted Kennedy. Elizabeth Warren persisted in warning us, too, even after Yertle McConnell told her to sit down and shut up. Every Republican senator knew Sessions was a reprehensible bigot who was unfit for this position, so this is all on every one of them as well.

His sad observance as a conservative watching 40 years of Republican majority behavior is that they always want to rule and always happily fail their duty to governance of a republic. (My words. But crony sacking of a very wealthy nation has to be fun, fun, fun.)

Reading this, though, does anyone doubt this man believes the the balance of power between executive, legislative and judicial branches should be done away with, in favor of the executive? He's far from alone. It could happen here.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/442nd_Infantry_Regiment_(United_States)

The 442nd Regimental Combat Team is an infantry regiment of the United States Army, part of the Army Reserve. The regiment was a fighting unit composed almost entirely of American soldiers of Japanese ancestry (mostly from Hawaii) who fought in World War II. Most of the families of mainland Japanese Americans were confined to internment camps in the United States interior. Beginning in 1944, the regiment fought primarily in Europe during World War II,[2] in particular Italy, southern France, and Germany.

The 442nd Regiment was the most decorated unit for its size and length of service in the history of American warfare.[3] The 4,000 men who initially made up the unit in April 1943 had to be replaced nearly 2.5 times. In total, about 14,000 men served, earning 9,486 Purple Hearts. The unit was awarded eight Presidential Unit Citations (five earned in one month).[4]:201 Twenty-one of its members were awarded Medals of Honor.[2] Its motto was "Go for Broke".
