Couple charged in shooting outside Seattle right-wing event

SEATTLE (AP) — Prosecutors on Monday charged a couple in connection with a shooting during a demonstration over the appearance of a right-wing speaker at the University of Washington in January.

Elizabeth Hokoana, 29, was charged with first-degree assault with a firearm enhancement for shooting a 34-year-old protester in the abdomen. Her husband, Marc Hokoana, who was initially suspected of the shooting, was charged with third-degree assault.

. . .

Prosecuting Attorney Dan Satterberg said Monday that the evidence will show the two took a gun into a volatile protest on the Seattle campus.

"Marc Hokoana engaged in several provocative acts, including using pepper spray on the crowd," Satterberg said in his statement. "The crowd reacted predictably to being pepper sprayed, but the evidence will show that at the time Elizabeth Hokoana fired her pistol that her husband was not in imminent danger," he added.

Couples bond over the strangest things sometimes. Why can't responsible gun owners like these two just act out their fantasies at a shooting range and go home and consensually choke each other?

The earlier Seattle Times articles had copies of the facebook posts that the husband was planning to agitate and the wife would be armed. How is it that the prosecutor isn't going with harder charges?

Prosecutor is going for a realistic charge rather than let them walk on a charge that requires more proof. Also, I think there's a bit of Bundy/Malheur Fear of a Gundamentalist PNW Jury going on.

Ideally, she pleads to Felony Assault and this goes away, along with her RKBA and UW campus access for Eternity. But I bet it goes to trial.

The posing on the Suzallo Library stairs really irritates this UW Alumni.
