GOP bill would discipline hecklers at college speeches

MADISON, Wis. (AP) University of Wisconsin students who disrupt speeches and demonstrations could be expelled and campuses would have to remain neutral on public issue under a bill Republican legislators are pushing this week.
The bill comes as free speech issues have grown more contentious on college campuses across the country. Conservatives are worried that right-wing speakers aren't given equal treatment as liberal campus presenters and some students have complained about free expression fanning racial tensions.
In Madison, home to the University of Wisconsin's flagship campus, students shouted down and traded obscene gestures with ex-Brietbart editor and conservative columnist Ben Shapiro during a presentation in November. This week, supporters of conservative commentator Ann Coulter rallied behind her after the University of California-Berkeley cancelled her speech citing concerns that violence could erupt.
The bill is based on a model proposal the conservative Arizona-based Goldwater Institute put together to address campus free-speech issues. Legislation based on the model has been enacted in Colorado, with others being considered in five states, including Michigan, North Carolina and Virginia, according to the institute.

(As Moms Mably would have said, House Assembly Speaker Robin Vos could always get a job snapping holes in doughnuts.)

(57,378 posts)I don't like the heckler's veto, but it's not my decision.
Trying to shut down free speech through violent means is not a protected right. That's an easy one.
I remember Goldwater, and I don't think he would have liked this.

(100,059 posts)Like it gives them a free pass to be racist, sexist, belligerent assholes? If they want to restrict free speech because they feel they don't get an equal say, they should realize that they own the fucking media!!!!!! Fox News is played in more places than CNN. Every book on every book shelf in every airport and every store has a conservative bent to it. Religious rock music is being played in more public places than easy listening music. Yet the snowflakes act like they don't get a say in the media and that there's a "culture war" going on. And if they want to restrict free speech, they should realize that it will hurt them as much as it will hurt us. I hate these people.

(1,947 posts)except, perhaps when they are government representatives who haven't been listening to constituents. I think it is better to debate right-wingers when that is possible and to avoid giving them publicity and an audience when it's not. Many of the right wing campus speakers depend on hecklers to promote themselves and to support a narrative about the lack of free speech on campuses.
But there is a point at which their "speech" becomes stochastic terrorism. They circulate videos and photographs of protesters, sometimes identifying the individual protesters. My daughter was part of a feminist group that protested one of them, and most of the members of her group were identified; phone numbers, emails and addressed circulated; and they were receiving death and rape threats for months.

(100,059 posts)They claim they're victims of free speech, but really they have a right to say what they want to say. I'd be mortified if Ann Coulter or SE Cupp or Rush Limbaugh were the commencement speaker at my graduation, I just wouldn't go. I wouldn't protest or anything, I just wouldn't pay attention. I find this whole "conservatives playing the victim when it comes to free speech" thing very scary. They're playing with fire. But when you show up to rallies drunk and belligerent with ski masks and crowbars, are you really supporting free speech?
