With Obama's $400K Speech, Chaffetz To Revive Bill Curbing Presidents' Pensions

Source: Talking Points Memo

By CAITLIN MACNEAL Published MAY 4, 2017 7:14 AM

House Oversight Chair Jason Chaffetz (R-UT) on Wednesday said that he will re-introduce a bill vetoed by President Barack Obama that would impose limits on presidential pensions now that Obama has reportedly accepted $400,000 for a speech.

“The Obama hypocrisy on this issue is revealing,” Chaffetz told USA Today. “His veto was very self-serving.”

He later tweeted USA Today’s headline, which reads, “Obama’s $400,000 speech could prompt Congress to go after his pension,” with the phrase “Yes, it will.”

The bill, which was sponsored by Chaffetz last year, would cap presidents’ pensions at $200,000 with an additional $200,000 for expenses like paying staff. With the bill, titled the Presidential Allowance Modernization Act, the president’s pension would see cuts when the president’s income exceeds $400,000.

‘Shameful’: Internet slams Jason Chaffetz for going after Obama’s pension — instead of Trump’s Russia ties

-snip-

On Wednesday, Chaffetz responded to reports that Barack Obama was offered $400,000 for a Wall Street speech, prompting suggestions the House Oversight Committee chairman may look into the former president’s pension. Chaffetz—who indicated he doesn’t want to be in government so he can focus on the private sector—appears to once again be interested in what’s going on in the government.

Naturally, the internet had words for Chaffetz’s blatant hypocrisy:

He is not worth a cent & hates ACA, so take away both his pension & health care.

Thankfully, he is leaving but I'm sure we will be hearing more about him in Russiagate.

This bill seems to be pretty stupid. So, one guy will cost the government between $400,000-a few million dollars a year. That is pocket change for a country that has an economy that generates about $13 trillion and spends about $500 billion on its defense department.

On another note, is Michael Flynn going to get his pension cut? Forget about Flynn's ties to Russia and other foreign powers lets talk about the money he made after he retired from the military. Didn't he make millions after retiring from the military? Didn't he get at least $40,000 for making an appearance in Russia? Didn't he sign lobbying deals with foreign countries that will pay him large amounts of money? What about other generals? What about David Paterus? Many generals have the potential to get six figure pensions; however, at the same time they can get just as much or more money working for military contractors. Should those generals lose their pensions?

I do not think the pensions of generals should be reduced just because they can make money after leaving the military. I feel the same way about Presidents. We should not ask Presidents to stop living and working after they leave the White House.

Something tells me Trump will veto this one.
