Gov. Greg Abbott signs 'sanctuary cities' ban into law on Facebook Live

AUSTIN -- Gov. Greg Abbott has signed the state's sanctuary city ban into law, achieving one of his major legislative goals for the session and putting into statute a bill that is almost certainly on its way to legal challenges from opponents.

"Texans expect us to keep them safe and that is exactly what we are going to do by me signing this law," Abbott said before inking his signature on the law during a Facebook Live video Sunday night.

Abbott, who designated the ban as an emergency item in January, signed the bill just four days after it was given final approval by both chambers of the Legislature. Its passage into law is a major victory for Abbott and Republicans who advocate for stricter enforcement of immigration law. The Legislature has tried to pass a ban every session since 2011.

Opponents of the law were quick in their condemnation. Thomas Saenz, the president of the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said the law was a "colossal blunder" and said the lawmakers who championed it were small-hearted.

It's well-established that sanctuary cities actually have a LOWER rate of crime than non-sanctuary cities, because the illegal immigrants can report crimes to the police without the fear of being deported, and are more willing to assist police in prosecutions.

Now, the illegal immigrant community will offer Texas police no help in criminal apprehension and crime prevention.
