Trump voters lament deportation of their neighbor

Last edited Mon May 8, 2017, 12:37 AM - Edit history (1)

A Sunday “60 Minutes” report detailed the story of Roberto Beristain, an immigrant deported to Mexico after being in the U.S. for nearly 20 years.

Family and friends of the Granger, Ind., business owner spoke with the CBS News program, expressing frustration that someone with no criminal record was separated from his wife and children, who are all citizens.

Michelle Craig, who voted for President Trump, said she did so because Trump promised to deport dangerous criminals. This is not the person he said he would deport,” she said. “The community is better for having someone like” Beristain in it.

Beristain was the longtime cook and new owner of a restaurant in town, “Eddie’s Steak Shed,” that employs about 20 people, “60 Minutes” noted. He had no criminal record. He entered the U.S. in 1998 illegally but had been issued a temporary work permit, social security number and driver’s license under the Obama administration.

The policy was already to deport dangerous criminals after they served their sentence. Some may have been missed, but a large number were deported.

You got your neighbor deported, devastated his US citizen family, and ruined a local business and the 20 jobs it provided. Hope you never sleep easy again. And good luck with your pre-existing condition of being a woman under Trumpcare. Dumbass.

There is really no way they misunderstood. "Deportation Force" to deport all illegals, starting with the criminals is not something that is possible to misunderstand.

They knew very well. Some neighbors of Jews acted "surprised" when their Jewish neighbors were "deported," but they knew very well what supporting the Nazis was all about.

Maybe the wife can take over the business.

Trump said he would deport the criminals and rapists, AND claimed that all Mexicans are criminals and rapists. What part did Michelle Craig not understand?

how this small town was affected by illegals? They seem to think ALL illegals are crooks, apart from their friend. Did they not think there are many more like him? Not to mention that tRump had many, many other plans for the country that will affect EVERYONE, like the healthcare fiasco. Watching the segment, I was struck by how "normal" these people looked, yet how DUMB they truly are.

and I guarantee you that they are thinking that an American should have that business.

Trump was quite clear about stopping illegal immigration and deporting illegals...possibly even those brought to the US as babies. Quite clear. NO WAY they misunderstood.

for a McCain type of candidate (not me, mind you), but trump was a simple, in your face, you have to know what the fuck you are voting for here. And when his wife said she was voting to make the economy better, I almost fell off my chair. Now, I always think the economy can always improve for many people who struggle pay check to pay check but Obama could have had 0% unemployment and people like her would say they want the economy to improve. And trump's main campaign issue was a wall a deportation. She has blinders on.

...and they would complain that he couldn't swim.

No matter what he did such people said it was wrong.

I didn't agree with everything President Obama said or did but I didn't automatically oppose anything because of the man's skin color, which is what most Branch Trumpvidians did.

I'm going off memory here, but the restaurant was popular, busy, successful by all accounts.

Restaurants are one of the businesses that quickly suffer or go under when the economy is bad. So that guys wife saying she voted over the economy is just an excuse that she pulled out of her ass.

She had visa violations ( shes from Greece) in her youth but that was OK for her. Besides, why should her husband get special treatment? He's no more deserving than the quiet good people in the shadows. He married into that restaurant, BTW, so I think she can manage.

at least i could feel that while they may be stupid, naive, ignorant or whatever it was still something positive that appealed to them.

but in this case trump is an openly bigoted piece of shit who had already been deporting and banning people which they fully supported until it came to them .
