Jimmy Carter said he voted for Bernie Sanders

Last edited Tue May 9, 2017, 05:15 PM - Edit history (1)

Source: USA Today

Former President Jimmy Carter, while gushing about Vermont's Bernie Sanders, candidly told a crowd on Monday he voted for the independent senator over Democrat Hillary Clinton during the 2016 Democratic primary.

Sanders and Carter shared the stage at the Carter Center in Atlanta for a conversation on human rights. There, Sanders spoke with his campaign-style vigor on a range of issues, from American values, the need to "revitalize American democracy" and boost voter turnout.

After Sanders presented one of his many comments, Carter spilled his endorsement with, "Can you all see why I voted for him?"

It drew laughs from Sanders, Carter, and the crowd. The one-term president didn't expand on his pick. He did add "dissatisfaction with the existing system of politics" resulted in President Trump's election.

I don't think he campaigned for Bernie either... actually I don't think he came out and endorsed anyone before the primary. But he did subsequently make his feelings known.

What do you think Carter should do to help Ossoff? Do you think Hillary or Obama should do anything?

I searched prior to posting this, and couldn't find it. If you've seen it on LBN, let me know where and I'll delete.

Now if this is indeed its first mention on LBN, it's certainly meaningful news - regardless of how one voted in the primary.

Though, you may want to edit your OP to four paragraphs (LBN strictly adheres to the four paragraph rule).

Does that mean he wrote Sanders' name in?

Or does he mean he voted for Sanders to be the nominee, but when Sanders lost, he then voted for HRC in the election?

In November, I expect he voted for Hillary. Certainly not Trump! And I don't see him as a protest-write-in kind of voter.

There is nothing wrong with having voted for Sanders in the primary, and then voting for Clinton in the general.

Many of us did. That is called democracy.

Thank goodness he wasn't like Susan Sarandon. Carter is a loyal Democrat and I admire him very much. But, the primaries are over and I'm not really sure if it matters very much WHO he voted for in the primary.

's to the Carter family.

Protective tariffs for his family business. Thinks timber industry in Canada has too much local government ownership and can undercut American competition.

Koch Bros. are also in the Timber industry.(Georgia-Pacific Corp). They also want help on the trade front.

Economics makes strange bedfellows.

I think it might be great to switch to Canadian system.

Well, LBJ and Truman did, after being thrown into taking office. But declined to run for a real full time term.

They were both great candidates and we all made choices as did President Carter. I see no reason to criticize Carter for this.
