According to recently-revealed court documents, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is looking into a case that includes then-candidate Donald Trumps public call for Russia to hack then-candidate Hillary Clintons emails.
During a 2016 campaign press conference, Trump made a plea directly to Russian President Vladimir Putins government.
I will tell you this, Russia: If youre listening, I hope youre able to find the 30,000 emails that are missing, Trump said in front of supporters in Florida. I think you will probably be rewarded mightily by our press.
According to court filings obtained by The Sparrow Project, those remarks are now part of an FBI investigation.

(37,648 posts)Trump was giving a request directly to Russia over national tv, and he could say it was just campaign rhetoric.
But I regarded it as a request at the time. Within a few days, Wikileaks dumped a bunch of emails to the public, as if in compliance w/Trump's request.

Better late than never, I guess.

(4,407 posts)The F.B.I. has only stated that anything which has reference to Trump's call to hack or may otherwise be related to such call could be included with information related to the ongoing investigation. We know Flynn is under investigation. We know that the circumstances of the Russian interference is under investigation. It does not make the leap to confirm Trump himself is under investigation.
I keep seeing threads that this is an admission by the F.B.I. that Trump himself is under investigation and my reading of it (admittedly it might be more obvious to a lawyer reading this) makes no such admission. Investigative bodies normally fight to exempt anything that might even touch upon an ongoing investigation from FOIA discovery.
Listen, I'm as convinced as anyone that Trump is guilty and I hope to hell he is included in any investigation, but that is not what the pleading says. Bad assumptions make for fake news.

(43,069 posts)I think, around noon, when I heard Trump had said that. That night Obama
addressed the DNC, and when i heard his quintessential speech on what
being American means and what America is, I went to bed thinking, this
thing is over, Trump is cooked, and he's cooked himself. No one is going
to let that slide by.
Surprise.
