Rex Tillerson After Comey Firing: I Have To Earn Trump's 'Confidence Every Day'

In the aftermath of President Donald Trump firing FBI Director James Comey, the White House made staff rather scarce when it came to the Sunday shows this morning, with most of the programs having nobody from the administration on to give the president’s side of the situation.

One exception was Meet the Press, where Secretary of State Rex Tillerson appeared. Host Chuck Todd asked the country’s top diplomat how much independence he was given by the president and if he was concerned by the firing of Comey.

“Not at all, Chuck,” Tillerson responded. “I have a great relationship with the president. I understand what his objectives are.”

He continued, “And I understand I have to earn his confidence every day with how I go about those affairs and how I go about conducting the State Department’s activities consistent with the direction he wants to take the country.”

2. It is a weird statement, but in reality it reflects that anyone in the cabinet serves at the

will of the President. Still, I can't picture any senior Obama cabinet member saying they have to think of that every day. In addition, I suspect that a credible Secretary would have a limit to how far from their personal positions they would be willing to go without resigning. Because they had political careers, we knew more of where Clinton and Kerry stood on issues from their pasts. I would imagine that both felt that they could more things in the right direction as Obama's Secretaries.

However, remember that Obama did ask Secretary Hagel to step down. This was not done because of anything that Hagel did that was wrong, it was because Obama thought someone else might better reflect his direction.
