6M with pre-existing conditions could be charged more under GOP plan

More than 6 million people with pre-existing conditions could face higher insurance premiums under the GOP's ObamaCare repeal bill because of gaps in coverage, according to a new analysis by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF).
Under the American Health Care Act (AHCA), which narrowly passed the House last month, states would be allowed to waive the community rating provision of ObamaCare, which prevents insurers from charging more for those with pre-existing conditions.
The provision was added in the final days before the bill's passage to win conservative votes. Conservatives argue that the provision won't affect many people, because it only targets enrollees who have had a gap in insurance of at least 63 consecutive days.
But according to the analysis released Wednesday, 6.3 million people who have a pre-existing condition also have had gaps in coverage that would lead to a substantial premium increase. Since the legislation keeps ObamaCare's ban on insurers denying coverage based on pre-existing conditions, those people would instead be charged a lot more money.

If it wasn't for Trump going out of his way to distract from scandals with bigger scandals, a lot of focus would be on the GOP's war on healthcare.

(37,648 posts)This started in 2014 and has increasingly gotten worse.
I have not heard any sympathy for ME. The ONLY reason my premiums are so high is because of my age. I have no claims to speak of, no medical conditions.
I have to pay a lot more than someone who is 35 and has high claims.
But I haven't heard even one peep all these years from anyone that indicates anyone cares about my situation.
So I'm perplexed why there is all this concern for a different group who is faced with MY situation that has been existing for years. ???
To the contrary, one of my posts was banned because suggesting that another group should pay higher premiums, based on fairness, is a RW meme. Totally ignoring the fact that there are already groups paying much higher premiums, under the ACA. There ARE different rates for different groups already.
So if a 35 year old is paying $300/month premium, is it fair to charge him triple that, because of his pre-existing condition, which increases the likelihood of higher claims? You tell me. I have been paying triple premiums since 2014 because of my age. So this is nothing new. It's already part of the ACA. It's just going to add a new group to it.

(37,648 posts)much less a word about something should be done.
Of course nothing will be done. It gets worse under the GOP plan, but no matter because w/o the subsidy I can't afford it, anyway.
While I understand the age thing in a way (statistics), it is so unfair to those who are healthy. I try to live a healthy lifestyle, and it has paid off, plus genetics. It's so unfair to charge me triple premiums just because of my age, when I'm healthier than many half my age. Yes, statistically I'm more likely to get certain conditions...but so are some younger people who already have high blood pressure or diabetes (they have increased likelihood of stroke & other conditions).
Oh, well. It's too late for me. Water under the bridge. It no longer affects me what health care plan there is, now.
