Nikki Haley: 'We absolutely need' Mueller's Russia investigation
Source: Politico
The independent investigation into possible ties between Russian efforts to interfere in last years election and associates of President Donald Trump is necessary, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said in an interview that aired Monday morning, so that the issue can be put to rest.
The Department of Justice announced last week that former FBI Director Robert Mueller had been appointed as a special prosecutor to oversee the Russia investigation, a move that the president took little time to characterize as the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history. But Haley, visiting Jordan on her first foreign trip as Trumps representative at the U.N., voiced support for Muellers appointment.
I think we absolutely need the investigation, she told NBCs Today show. I think that all these questions need to be answered so that the administration can get back to work.

(51,582 posts)Correct me if I am wrong. Many people on CNN and MSNBC are calling for a separate independent investigation. There is already a planned march for June 3 called #MarchForTruth in over 100 sister cities besides Wash DC calling for this type of investigation into Russia. Check out the march via Indivisible. After 9/11 there was an investigation such as this. It was thorough and complete as well as done in only 6 months (originally they thought it would take 9).

(562 posts)In Watergate, Archibold Cox was appointed special prosecutor to investigate whether probable cause exists to charge federal crimes, and a Senate special committee headed by Sam Irvin was formed with broader powers of investigation to determine general malfeasance, since "high crimes and misdemeanors" is a broad term that may not be covered by a specific statute. A special prosecutor investigation is done confidentiality and can take years.
The risk is that Mueller, if not fired or severely fucked with, won't find sufficient evidence a federal crime was committee beyond a reasonable doubt. That's why shitbag Alan Dershowitz said not to worry on Fox, though obstruction of justice/abuse of power is the only federal crime Nixon was charged with so Derschowitz is wrong.
There's no reason to expect Republicans to agree to a special committee, and it would probably bogged down in Republican obstruction at this point.
