Among a flurry of subpoenas issued Wednesday for Donald Trump confidantes Mike Flynn and Michael Cohen, three of the four related to questions about unmaskingor why the names of Trump associates were referenced in intelligence reports under Barack Obamas administration, the Wall Street Journal reports.
Republicans have been pushing for information on unmasking requests made by former national security adviser Susan Rice, which have been used as a de-facto defense for Trumps unsubstantiated claim that Obama wiretapped Trump Tower during the 2016 presidential election.
But several subpoenas issued Wednesday did not come from the House Intelligence Committee writ large, but from chair Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA). Nunes previously said he would step aside from the probe after it was revealed he obtained information about unmasking during a secret White House meeting. Nunes would later use that informationprovided to him by former Trump transition official and Flynn loyalistto give credence to the presidents dubious wiretap claim.
On May 19, Nunes changed course, announcing hell remain an active chair in the investigation.

(5,801 posts)but, then, a significant segment of the American electorate has shown incredible stupidity and susceptibility to BS if repeated long enough and from enough front group sources for GOPee lies. We'll see whether the cons can fool enough dumbasses into supporting more tax cuts for the rich at the expense of everyone else. Which is their primary goal at this point.
This is the most heavily propagandized country in the world. And it shows.

(11,119 posts)I'm too smart to fall for any of this. I will post something to the effect of "PRE-EMPTIVE SMEAR?" in every thread and FB forum with negative stuff about high-profile Dems...

(48,988 posts)Reference Oliver North getting off charges by testifying before Congress. That did have a "limited" grant of immunity that turned out to be impossible to get around.

(92,136 posts)and there is nothing stopping Mueller from going after all parties involved, and that includes Nunes and Chavetz.
At the time of Iran/Contra, North was portrayed as some kind of hero, despite the fact that he willfully destroyed evidence and lied to Congress, which violated both civilian and military law. He actually did get convicted, but won on appeal against those convictions, ironically with the help of the ACLU, but he also lost when he ran for Senate in Virginia against Chuck Robb.
Though he had good optics at those hearings, the reality was that North was a liar. Actually, still is.
The question is will Flynn be the fall guy this time?

(92,136 posts)NOT to hire Michael Flynn, because he had been compromised, and trump and company ignored it completely.
Before the election Harry Reid and other key people in Congress said there was extremely disturbing evidence they had seen regarding Russian involvement in our election.
McConnell may have been involved in covering up those reports.
This could very well have a snow ball effect regarding who was involved, not only with any Russian collusion or interference, but also those who had an active role to cover it up.

(1,007 posts)And the reason I say that, wasn't Warren and Burr given full control to subpoena anyone they wished without having to confirm with the other members of the Senate committee? The Senate committee voted to give those two authority to subpoena anyone they chose.
Is Nunes' miss stepping now by not getting permission from all members of the House committee for the subpoenas?

(888 posts)Is not that how he got in trouble before. By issuing a press conference without getting sign off from all the members?
Was not that the reason he was moved aside in the committee.
Sounds like blocking move to me, probably why James Comey refuse the house committee testimony

(16,072 posts)He still has a security clearance, he's only lost his TS/SCI clearances! It just means he can still view secret and classified information, but not top secret/Sensitive compartmented information (SCI)!
He can remain on the Itell Cmte, just in a limited capacity!
If Ryan were smart, and we know he isn't, he'd remove Nunes from the Intel Cmte for the time being!
