Feds Bust Multi-Million-Dollar Opioid-Drug Ring In Utah
Source: AP
Federal authorities in Utah say they've busted a multimillion-dollar opioid-drug ring based in a suburban Salt Lake City basement, underscoring how a small operation can quickly turn out hundreds of thousands of potentially fatal fentanyl pills to eager buyers.
U.S. Attorney for Utah John Huber said Wednesday that the seizure of nearly 500,000 pills ranks among the largest in the country. He says the group who met at an eBay call center bought drugs from China and pressed them into fake prescription drugs sold online.
Authorities say the drugs were especially dangerous because they were manufactured to look like prescription pain pills, so users would not have realized they were taking the more powerful fentanyl the drug blamed for the death of entertainer Prince.

I'm glad they busted that operation. Fentanyl is some nasty shit.

(33,643 posts)Difference between Fentanyl and morphine or heroin or oxy is that the proper dosage is measured in micrograms, not milligrams. Also, its a true 'synthetic' in that it can be made without an opium-derived feedstock.
If someone has the proper equipment to measure dosages reliably, they could make a fake 'percocet' using fentanyl instead of oxycodone, and it would be pretty close to indistinguishable to the end user unless they're serious afficionados of their dope.
Fentanyl is primarily dangerous simply because measuring proper doses in the scale of micrograms requires training and somewhat expensive equipment, that many people who handle and market it ... do not have.
I mean, 'dangerous' in an additional way ... besides it being an opioid drug.

(1,257 posts)I did some research a bit ago, but the dosage info was not clear.
What you have clarified makes perfect sense, and I am certain that the drug is very useful in hands of a trained medical professional.
Just saying that it is "bad shit" really is a bit reactionary, though it being on the streets is definitely a bad thing.
Any prescribed drug is basically fatal in improper doses. I doubt that most folks can fathom the difference between micrograms, and milligrams. Dangerous, as you have stated.
It is also pretty awful, that being synthetic, one cannot just look for illicit poppy propagation and harvesting, or bulky raw opium as an indicator of opium traffic.
