Iran minister calls Trump's condolences for attacks 'repugnant'

Source: Reuters

Thu Jun 8, 2017 | 8:13am EDT

Iran's foreign minister on Thursday rejected Donald Trump's condolences for deadly attacks in Tehran, calling the U.S. president's words repugnant.

Trump had said he prayed for the victims of Wednesday's attacks that were claimed by Islamic State, but added that "states that sponsor terrorism risk falling victim to the evil they promote." Mohammad Javad Zarif wrote on his Twitter account: "Repugnant White House statement .... Iranian people reject such U.S. claims of friendship."

Suicide bombers and gunmen attacked the Iranian parliament and Ayatollah Khomeini's mausoleum in Tehran, killing at least 13 people in an unprecedented assault that Iran's Revolutionary Guards blamed on regional rival Saudi Arabia.

Islamic State claimed responsibility and threatened more attacks against Iran's majority Shi'ite population, seen by the hardline Sunni militants as heretics. Saudi Arabia said it was not involved.

without adding a cheap shot. And who's the god he prayed to? Thought he only worshiped money.

3. That was a passive-aggressive statement by Trump.

First, he "prayed" for them....possibly inappropriate, since Iran is a religious government, isn't it? And it's not Christian.

Second is the slap against Iran in a supposedly sympathetic statement for the dead and injured.

Everything this guy does is embarrassing, makes our relations with foreign governments worse (except Russia), and is inappropriate and undignified and juvenile.

He is UNFIT for office. Will no one rescue our country from this madman?

5. Nice analysis on it -- it seriously would have been better to not put out a statement at all --

and no statement would be a diplomatic faux pas. Not to mention, the rest of the world understands that Iran is fighting ISIS and has never helped that radical SUNNI terror group, which considers all Shia apostates. Trump needs to understand that his official statements are to the world as a whole ... not to Fox News.

I completely agree that he has greatly damaged American relations with most of our allies. It is hard to believe that he is likely already more hated in the UK, France, Germany and Italy than GWB was at any point of time. However, thinking back to the transition between Bush and Obama, our position in those countries immediately improved. While the worldwide impact may have been greater because of who Obama is, I would bet that ANY Democrat winning in 2008 would have seen a similar shift in opinion. We need to concentrate on stopping the worst things he wants to do - even as we have little governmental power to do that, knowing that this too is temporary.

But the rest of the world is too busy laughing at us for electing this idiot and an equally incompetent government. They'll probably let us stir in our own juices for this.

9. That was a disgusting, unprofessional statement, even if true.

You just don't say something like that. International decorum dictates this. How would Americans feel if another nation sent a cable saying, "We're sorry 9/11 happened, but you really shouldn't have provided support to Al Qaeda?"

These people in the Trump Administration are clueless idiots. I know Trump is looking to impress his base by "sticking it to Iran," and the statement was correct (especially against Iran), but my god - show some class at least! People died in a national tragedy. All of their communications are totally unprofessional, and I think that speaks to the quality of this Administration.

13. Oddly, the cable you suggested would be more accurate - we had funded AQ

The statement would have truer of most Sunni countries. Even though Marco Rubio tried to argue that the US didn't fight ISIS to begin with because doing so would anger Iran and they were working with Iran on the nuclear deal -- Kerry quietly explained to Rubio that Iran was itself fighting ISIS.

If Drumpf's comment was the equivalent of "If you lie with dogs you're going to get fleas.", then I can't argue with that. Diplomatically it's an ignorant thing to say to a supposed ally. But, it's kind of true.

ISIS is Sunni, they call Shia apostates and hate them. Iran is mostly Shia.

ISIS are SUNNI fleas.

Osama Bin Laden might have been waxed by the Russkies and we wouldn't have had 9/11.

Ignorant thing to say but it is kind of true as you put it
