Lakota, others celebrate rare white bison at Conn. farm, name him Yellow Medicine Dancing Boy

Source: AP-Washington Post

By Associated Press

GOSHEN, Conn. — Dozens of Native Americans wore the traditional garb of their ancestors, sang songs and beat drums on a western Connecticut farm Saturday in celebration of the birth of one of the world’s rarest animals — a white bison.

The miracle calf was officially named Yellow Medicine Dancing Boy at the elaborate ceremony at the Mohawk Bison farm in Goshen in the state’s northwestern hills. It was born June 16 at the farm of fourth-generation farmer Peter Fay.

Many Native Americans consider white bison a symbol of hope and unity; some consider their births sacred events. Experts say white bison are as rare as one in 10 million.

Yellow Medicine Dancing Boy is not an albino, and Fay said DNA testing confirmed the animal’s bloodlines are pure and there was no intermingling with cattle.

Sacred white buffalo killed in Texas; reward offered by ranch for killer
By Dylan Stableford | Tue, May 8, 2012

A North Texas ranch is offering a reward for information leading to the arrest in the killing of its sacred white buffalo.

The rare white buffalo, a male calf named Lightning Medicine Cloud, was found slaughtered and skinned on April 30 on Lakota Ranch near Greenville, Texas, just shy of its first birthday. Its mother died the next day.

The ranch's owner, Arby Little Soldier, said he thinks the mother was poisoned. Little Soldier, the great-great-great grandson of Sitting Bull, was away on a trip when the white buffalo was killed.

"Someone who probably knew we were out of town killed him and stripped the meat," Little Soldier told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. "I think it was a professional hit on the mom."

I was so sickened about what happened to the earlier calf and his mother. I hope they find out who did it and throw the book at them.

They are so rare, you're right. It is as though we've been given a 2nd chance. I don't think you'll find the vicious hatred toward native americans in Ct as in the west. More respect and honor. At least I hope. That is my feeling, anyway.

Captain James T. Kirk: Your wife, Professor. Where is she?
Professor Robert Crater: She... was the last of her kind.
Captain James T. Kirk: The last of her kind?
Professor Robert Crater: The last of its kind. Earth history, remember? Like the passenger pigeon or buffalo.
[he faints a little]
Professor Robert Crater: Ooh! I feel strange.
Captain James T. Kirk: Just stunned. You'll be able to think in a minute.
Mr. Spock: The Earth buffalo. What about it?
Professor Robert Crater: Once there were millions of them... prairies black with them. One herd covered three whole states... and when they moved, they were like thunder.
Mr. Spock: And now they're gone. Is that what you mean?
Professor Robert Crater: Like the creatures here. Once there were millions of them. Now there's one left. Nancy understood.
Mr. Spock: Always in the past tense.
Captain James T. Kirk: Where's your wife? Where's she now?
Professor Robert Crater: Dead. Buried up on a hill. It killed her.
Captain James T. Kirk: When?
Professor Robert Crater: Oh, a year... or was it two?

The final two lines of "The Man Trap"

"Is something wrong, Captain?"

"I was just thinking about the buffalo, Mr. Spock."

thanks largely to the Mashantucket Pequot across the state in Ledyard, who were not only pioneers in gaming with Foxwoods, but promote the culture through Schemitzun, the Festival of Green Corn and Dance.

A nice counterpoint to the stereotypical whitebread image of "Quinnehtuckut", "the land beside the long tidal river".

American Bison are remarkable in many ways..I was hired several years ago to photograph a herd..really awesome..

Thanks for posting..the second story has the same bewildering effect on me that stories of whale hunting, elephant hunting, and gorilla hunting has on me..great sadness in the inhumanity that man chooses to inflict..Sounds like in the initial story the white was killed for it's hide, but the comments of Little Soldier sound like the meat was taken too..Seems the likely suspect would be Japanese meat hunters..they seem to be the most prolific hunters of endangered species to fulfill some ridiculous superstitions in their belief system..

ation. We must vote in huge numbers to keep the GOP from stealing another one. It's bad enough they are redistricting everywhere they can and trying to disenfranchise every voter they can. Vote Obama enmasse.
