TALLAHASSEE A man who fled El Salvador more than 20 years ago and resided for years in Florida, where he raised a family and managed a local Piggly Wiggly store, was deported Friday amid revelations he tortured guerrillas during his time in the Salvadoran army.
Jose Francisco Grijalva Monroy, known to his friends as Pancho, was removed from the United States and turned over to authorities in his homeland, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement announced in a news release.
ICE officials said Monroy, 49, testified that he tortured suspected guerrillas by hanging them by their hands from trees and slapping their chests with his bare hands. He also admitted that he tied guerrillas to the back of an army jeep and dragged them along the road until their skin came off.
Franklin County Sheriff A.J Tony Smith said news of Monroys deportation and his involvement in torture stunned people in the coastal town of Apalachicola, southwest of Tallahassee.

Mad Dog famously almost resigned a couple of months ago because of the blanket authority she reportedly wields in the Pentagon.

(860 posts)had some pretty fucked up people in the military. I used to watch honduran soldiers
training in hondo and you would think that they were victims of torture themselves.

(11,949 posts)And have shopped at the store many, many times.
I'm glad that he is gone, but he ran one hell of a grocery store I will say that!
They cater to both the locals with things like chitlins, and the rich tourist with decent wines and French cheeses.
