CHARLOTTE, N.C. ― On any given Saturday morning, Calla Hales is faced with hundreds of protesters outside the abortion clinic she runs. Members of various anti-abortion rights groups flock to A Preferred Women’s Health Center to preach, pray, and shame women who are trying to access their federally protected right to an abortion.

Patients are told that abortion is a violent act and that a woman’s sole purpose is to bear children. They are called selfish murderers; their husbands and boyfriends are called cowards.

The city of Charlotte has granted these groups sound permits, thus allowing them to set up their microphones and sound systems just off the property of the clinic. Through the doors of the health center, patients can hear the anti-abortion diatribes, almost all of which are given by white men.

“In Charlotte, black women are being persecuted by white men in the name of their God and it is wrong,” she told HuffPost. “This city isn’t doing it’s part to protect black women and that means it is my job as a black woman to help my sisters in need. That support is also extended to other people of color and white women.”

I'll say they can have an opinion.

And by costs I don't mean financial. I mean the unending nausea, the aches and pains and General discomfort, the worrying about if you're eating right or enough or too much, worrying about gestational diabetes, pre-eclampsia, being on bed rest (I was with my 1st and it sucked), worrying about things going wrong during labour...it's endless.

Then once the baby is born, a new mental load lands. My husband is an awesome dad but at the end of the day *I* am the one who knows when our oldest has occupational therapy next, when the baby's next round of vaccinations are, and when the cut off date is to sign our toddler up to be waitlisted for pre-k for 2018 (this is seriously ridiculous). *I* spend my days planning meals that are nutritionally not too shabby and tasty and worry about which kid will treat it like poison. *I* am the one who fields weekly phone calls from the school because our oldest has ASD and has many a meltdown. *I* am the one constantly thinking about tomorrow, next week, next month, next year in their lives.

When men do all that...ok they can have an opinion. Until then, just no.

There has always been harassment at women's clinics. In the early 80's I escorted for a while and the deplorables were always there. Sometimes they threw chopped chicken parts at the women entering the clinic as they screamed at them that this was what they were doing to their unborn babies.

The cruelest cut, however, was reserved for the poor women that they were able to convince to not have the procedure. They brought them in for religious counseling, and even threw them baby showers. They were Besties until the baby had been born...then, they cut them off cold. The cult of the fetus is a deeply sick one.
